D&D 5E PHB Roguish Archetypes

I think the Thief is that strongest followed closely by the Arcane Trickster.

The Assassin doe not play how it reads (to most people). The player will probably be disappointed.

Overall I find the Rogue to be the class that is the least new player friendly. The only 2 players I have had who didn't enjoy the game (in 5e) were Rogues. They were both new to RPGs, I have an experienced player with a Thief right now and he is having a lot of fun.

ATis probably better for new players than Thief as it has more straightforward button s.

Also, does this player's selection of Charlatan background indicate that they want to see more social interaction?

It was actually not player's decision. I built the PCs as pre-gens so that we could start playing straight away, and picked Charlatan instead of the most iconic Criminal because it sounded less 'bad' (keep in mind it's a family game).

I'd suggest the Arcane Trickster, most balanced between combat and none combat and no evil vibe, and it's more family friendly as it doesn't scream criminal like the other two.
