First Post
Might contain a few spoilers!

We are currently playing an old AD&D Underdark 3-part campaign (I suppose many of the longtime players will know it, I don't remember the exact name, the City of Glass Pool is one important location down there - we are already past that one and inside a gigantic cavern next to a huge underground lake) using 3E, where we are on the search for a female wizard (well were, we recently found her, but meanwhile we have been involved in bigger things going on down there) deep in the Underdark, fighting Derro, Kuo Toa, Illithids and worse.

The party:

12th level Gold Dwarf Cleric of Grumbar
12th level Lightfoot Halfling Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster (moi)
11th level Human Fighter/Psion
11th level Human Ranger/Fighter/Shadowdancer
11th level Shield Dwarf Fighter (NPC)
8th level (+2 ECL) Drow Fighter/Order of the Bow Initiate
?th level Human Wizard/Rogue (the female Wizard NPC)

So we are deep inside the Underdark now, exploring further to get more information about what's going on. We ventured into a system of connected caverns, where we heard some Illithids would have set up camp.

We found some Fire Giant kin (Fimir?) guarding the entrance, but they were no match for us, so we proceeded deeper into the cavern. Since some invisible Illithid already mind blasted us, my Halfling was scouting ahead with See Invisible. We got a message, that they and us had a common enemy (which was true, as we knew already) and they wanted to talk. Well, with a Gold Dwarf and a Drow, and already having fought Illithids on numerous occasions, this was not really an option. Making deals with these creatures just didn't come to mind, so we went on. Flying ahead through a huge cavern, my halfling spotted 4 Illithids (obviously invisible, as he couldn't see them before getting closer) scattered in a loose pattern and decided to turn around and take cover thereby warning the others. Then all hell broke lose.

The four Illithids were something like 10th level Psions each, with several protective powers up already, and there also was some dominated Human Rogue running around invisible, looking for opportunities to get her sneak attack to good use. Later one of the Giants also joined the party. At some point, all but two characters (the Cleric and my Trickster) were disabled by Mind Blasts or fled around a corner due to extremely low hit points (the Psion). The Cleric also had it rough, when he was down to 1 hit point facing 2 more attacks by the Giant, which missed fortunately.

This was quite a tough fight, the Illithids were pretty hard to kill with their high Spell Resistance, Flying, Invisibility and AC boosting powers, altho we managed to kill two of them, while the other two could get away via Dimension Door (or Slide). The Rogue bravely resisted getting blinded and polymorphed, but couldn't resist my Suggestion to kill the Giant and later the Confusion aimed at said Giant and her. Battered, but still alive and kicking we were victorious. A Detect Magic was cast, mainly looking over the Rogue first (the Illithids we met so far, never had items with them), but there was not much time to concentrate on it. An illusion (not noticed immediately) of an Illithid in richly embroidered robes popped up, ordering us to stop and talk. Of course, since we had decided not to ally with these abominations, we ignored the offer.

At this point (most characters had already backed off to the huge cavern's entrance, only the Cleric, Psion and my Halfling were standing around the body of the Rogue), we spotted 10 more Illithids closing in from 2 directions, some on foot, some flying. Gleep!

Initiative: Of course, this was one of the few times, I rolled really low in initiative (with a +8 bonus), the Illithids were going first. Uh oh!

6 Mind Blasts, 3 Dispels and 1 Mass Concussion later, due to some lucky streak only the Cleric was stunned and my Halfling's turn came up. Seeing not many options but to flee, he considered his options. Dimension Door would only allow him to carry one of the two party members (plus the Rogue's corpse including the loot ;)) with him, both are quite heavy and even leaving the corpse behind (which, of course, would have been done, if it were of any help) would not be enough to get both within the spell's weight limit.

The Psion was almost out of Psi points and could probably not flee from the flying Illithids, the Dwarf was stunned, his remaining spells would have been quite useful as he must have had one Haste spell left (Time domain) and my Trickster did have a Reduce spell memorized, but his own Haste had run out just one or two rounds before.

Seeing no way to stand there for one more round, my Trickster grabbed into his pocket and pulled out a fly scroll holding it in front of his familiar (a Thrush (a smaller version of the Raven familiar), who also had made all the Mind Blast saves :)), ordering her to cast the spell on the Psion (via Use Magic Device, using the master's skill ranks :D), which barely (but still) succeeded, and then casting the Dimension Door to get the Dwarf and the corpse out there reaaally quick! The Psion then could fly out of reach and the others had a good distance between them and the Illithids already, so we all got away alive and even got to keep the loot! :D

Phew! That was close...

Wow, sounds like the DM really didn't want you down in the caverns yet. Of course, maybe he/she really wanted you to ally with the Illithids.

As a DM, generally when I throw an overwhelming force at the players its because I don't want them to fight, I want something else.

As a player, when a DM tosses lots of BBEG's at the party I know he/she is trying to direct the adventure in a specific way. Therefore I look for ways to mess it up.

I have to say you were lucky to make it out alive. I DMed over the weekend and the party took on the large group of BBEGs with no prep. I managed to kill my wife's character (oops) and send several other party members running. The lore master cast a maximized chain lightning to kill most of the remaining foes.

Hopefully your group had fun, even if they were about to get their butts handed to them. One thing I have learned, 'being an adventurer can make for strange bedfellows'. :D

fight or flight

sounds like your DM wanted you to flee. I know that whenever I put in unbeatable odds as a DM I am trying to "encourage" the players to take a different route then draw swords and roll iniatitve.

Night Below... Yeah, that's the one, altho that "night" is lasting for a few months now, I think... :D

We should be in the 3rd part of the module and I really, really do not want to imagine just how bad it becomes, when we start to go underwater...

I actually think he wanted to let them help us, but seriously, how could we ally with such creatures.

And the huge attack in the end could easily have defeated the three of us, that were still in the cavern. 6 Mind Blasts, that means just 1 out of 6 saves gone bad (there were DCs as high as 27 among these, BTW) and that's it.

Yes, I think that was the intention (of the adventure module at least).

Yes we were. We definitely were (at least the three of us in the end). Well, my character is a halfling so he is lucky by nature! :D

Ouch! Running into the big baddies with no preparation can be rough!

We surely were prepared to face Illithids and multiples of them, but the 10 in the end where just nothing to realistically take one, especially being as battered as we were at the moment.

Hopefully your group had fun, even if they were about to get their butts handed to them.

Oh, definitely! And I wouldn't really say we were about to get our butts handed, at least not in the actual fight! :D

Well, maybe the Ranger was not having too much fun, standing around stunned for pretty much the whole combat... :(

One thing I have learned, 'being an adventurer can make for strange bedfellows'. :D

Hehe, how true (at least for my other D&D character)! ;)

I wonder if rangers have some secret vulnerability to mind flayers -- when my group faced off against a mind flayer, the ranger was the only one stunned by the mind blast.

Can't go wrong in the long run if they picked favored enemy Kuo-Toa, Aboleth, or Illithids though
