I use Paint Shop Pro........I can't afford Photoshop either.... :(
I have both, actually and prefer Paint Shop Pro and it's only $80.

The Adobe Photoshop I have is the EOM version. Cost me around $45. No book to tell you how the stupid program works but I never was one for leafing through those things anywho. $500 for a graphics program? BAH!

I think a lot of the sexiness of PS is that with Illustrator and the enormous variety of plugins you can do an awful lot. Of course I've got years of computer graphics experience, I might still not know everything that PS can do but I'm pretty sure that between PS and Illustrator I can do it if I can figure out how. About the ONLY thing I find a bit wrong with PS is the price, if simplicity were the key I think I'd still use PS though because that's what everyone uses. Tech support and tutorials are only a google search away...

I feel your pain, Clay. I would love to have the full version of Photoshop, along with a graphics tablet. Heck, while we're dreaming, I'd like a few million bucks so I could quit work and fiddle around w/ D&D stuff all day.

It's not as much fun as you think it is... oh, wait you said you'd have a million bucks so you wouldn't HAVE to work. Ok, that would be different. :(

Life bites right now!

I use The GIMP for all my processing needs. It may not be the be-all and end-all of programs, but I love the ability to rebind any command to a keyboard command. 90% of my work consists of left mouse clicks, and a sequence of Z . L , SHIFT-P PGUP CTRL-SHIFT-A R etc etc. It's so easy. I have access to Photoshop, and although I suspect it's more powerful and maybe a little quicker to process, The GIMP keeps me working instead of shifting the mouse pointer all over the screen.

That's just the way I work, but I've become accustomed to it.

software

I use Coreldraw 9 graphics suite (it can use all the adobe plugins, perhaps you can find it on ebay...) for all my interior/exterior maps, it's up to V11 now. Also look into Paint Shop Pro (Darkfuries uses it), Deneba's Canvas, & Adobe Illustrator.

draw/paint software

For me it comes down to what software I have at my disposal and how likely I am to learn it and create with it. If you really have a desire to draw, paint and create, you'll find a way with whatever software you can get.

When you are able to get your hands on new software, try it and see how it feels. I use Photoshop because it's what I've had longest and feel most comfortable with. I started years back with Ulead's Photo Plus (I think that was the name) and then got Photoshop sometime later. I also use Procreate Painter Classic sometimes, which came with my drawing tablet.

As far as coloring goes, nearly any paint program will do the trick so long as it supports layers. You really want that ability so you can work without damaging or covering up the original pen/pencil work. Then just practice to find methods of shading and highlighting that fit your style. Some swear by Photoshop's Burn and Dodge tools, and others prefer to use paint brush strokes with specific colors, and there are probably dozens of other ways to go about it.

However, the point is, you don't need expensive software. The desire to create artwork you like will supercede any shortcomings in your tools if you put forth some time and effort to get creative with the software. The end results, and your happiness with it, are far more important than the tools that got you there.

Oh, and another idea...if you also desire a drawing tablet, look for them on Ebay, or the low to mid-range models, and you'll find that many come bundled with good selections of drawing/painting software.

Het there,

I also recommend Paint Shop Pro. Just upgraded to V. 8 and I'm extremely pleased with it. It does everything I want and it uses most Photoshop plugins. All that for a price considerably lower than PS (I think the MSRP is about 120.00 but I'm not sure as I got mine for 49.95-I've bneen with PSP since 6).
