Are there iconic monsters (in your opinion) from the Monster Manual 2, Fiend Folio and the Monster Manual 3 that have further defined the D&D game as a unique thing? The Monster Manual I is full of iconic critters, sure -- but if there was going to be a book of previously published monsters from Wizards, what would you want in it? Pick three monsters and 1 template from the MM2, FF and MM3 as your iconic picks for D&D!

Here are mine:

Monster Manual 2:
> Myconid
> Hook Horror
> Hellfire Wyrm (broken out into age categories though)
> Spellstitched Template
Honorable Mention: Nimblewrights would have made this list but then the warforged arrived to steal its place.

Fiend Folio:
> Skulk
> Spriggan
> Yellow Musk Creeper
> Yellow Musk Zombie Template

Monster Manual 3:
> Warforged (in all their variations)
> Justicator (if modrons are truly gone, I want these bad boys over the formians/inevitables)
> Arcane Ooze
> Living Spell template (so fundamental a concept, I am surprised it was never done before).

Well, there were the Spellhaunt in 2e.

I'd say:

MM2:
Banshee
Gem Dragons
Yugoloth
Monster of Legend template
Honorable Mention: Death Knight template

FF:
Dark Ones
Ethergaunt
Kaorti
Ceremorphised Creature template (erroneously and confusingly labelled as "Half Illithid")
HM: Devas

MM3:
Petal
Shadesteel Golem
Warforged
Living Spell template
HM: Yugoloth (if they weren't updated reprints from MotP, and if they had been done a bit better, they would have made it in)

Well, if we're including monsters from previous editions, mine are as follows.

FF:
-Chronotyryn
-Demon, Klurichir
-Rilmani (all)

MM2:
-Hellfire Wyrm
-Linnorms (all)
-Yugoloths (all)

MM3:
-Ragewalker
-Death Giant
-Yugoloths (all)

Counting only creatures totally new to 3E, then I'd pick:

FF:
-Chronotyryn
-Demon, Klurichir
-Ethergaunts (all)
Honorable mention: Nerra, kaorti, blackstone gigant

MM2:
-Deathbringer
-Demon, Jovoc
-Hellfire Wyrm
Honorable mention: Demons (jarilith, kelvezu), Fiendwurm

MM3:
-Ragewalker
-Death Giant
-Ssvaklor
Honorable mention: Deathshrieker, Demons (arrow, sorrowsworn)

Best monsters from 3E that haven't made it into a Monster Manual yet:
-Rotripper (from Dragon Annual 5)
-Demon, Nabassu (from Dungeon 112)
-Spinewyrm (from Dungeon 110)
Honorable mention: Spiritovore energons (from Bastion of Broken Souls), Thruock (WOTC's site), Boneworm (WOTC's site), Orb Wrait (City of the Spider Queen)

MM2:
-Yugoloths (esp arcano- and ultro-)
-Neogi
-Dragons (Gem)
(Hon mention: Elemental wierds. Hard to use but cool concept that ends up being more than just a monster.)

-Death Knight template (sorry, the spellstitched is cool, but the death knight is iconic)

FF:
-Cranium Rats
-Devas
-Caryatid Columns

(Yeah, sorry, outside of swarms, the brand-new creatures from FF didn't do it for me.)

Templates - er, gah! Don't find any of them to be an iconic addition.

MM3:
- Warforged
- Arcane Giant
- Kenku

I'm not sure I've "settled in" with this book yet.

Template: Woodling. One in this week's game.

Feh. Forget those books. All hail the Manual of the Planes!

- Astral Dreadnoughts
- Energons
- Ephemera (Umbral Banyan! Yay!!)
- Gith
- Inevitables
- Para-Elementals
- Yugoloths -- the big four

And the templates:
- Half-Elemental
- Element Critters
- Shadow Critters
- Axiomatic & Anarchic

Almost every monster is a gem. I use the critters in book more than the entire MMII.
