Picking up 4E as inspiration for 3.5E play?

I'm getting the 4E giftset for my birthday on the 16 June and my main thoughts are around using it as a source of ideas to enhance our ongoing 3.5E game.

Don't get me wrong I am prepared to be convinced that it is a better game and will run a few games to see how the new edition works in play.

I was just wondering if anyone else had bought or was buying 4E with a similar mindset.

That's pretty much what I plan to do, as well as using the simplified monster format to inspire a few Savage Worlds conversions.

I think the changes to the fighter, ranger and rogue might inspire some changes in my 3.5E games. I'm not sure about the warlord yet: whether I should make it a standalone class or a fighter build using feats. I'm leaning toward the latter.

I certainly plan on doing this - I'm undecided on moving to 4E, but I plan on using skill challenges, some version of the dying rules, and possibly the 4E action points. Who knows what else right now.

Skill challenges seem reasonably back portable. It'll take some adjustments, but the skill and stunt DC table would also be a great backport as well, as 3e sometimes has trouble dealing with unusual actions.

I would suggest using the core core rules for combat, actions. They should be compatible with 3.5e, a lot of the systems are modular and there is a lot that would enhance a 3.Xe game.

You could even just use the DNDxp quick start rules to replace your 3e equivalents. I'd suggest using healing surges too.

Skill Challenges have already ported over and the inspiration of PoL is making an impact on my homebrew setting. Aside from that, I'll have to wait for some more 4E games to see if I find anything else.
