It seems to be based heavily on this artwork:

It was in (I think) Shady Dragon Inn, a book of NPC's for Basic D&D way back when. He also appeared in at least one module, had an action figure, and showed up in the D&D cartoon once. For me, that picture of Warduke IS D&D!

The stencil/guideline/whatever it's called was made pretty much "verbatim" from that pic, in fact. We flipped the art for the tattoo, though - it's on my right leg, and somehow it just looked a little off-balance with the sword wrapping over my shin even after numerous re-centerings with the transfer. Finally, we just mirrored the art, and it looked a lot better and more balanced. I'm really pleased with it - it came out even better than I was expecting, and it cost less than I expected. Guess I've found my tattooist for my next piece!

I'm already planning ahead for my next tattoo - this was my first one, but I've got the bug, it seems. I'm leaning toward either Morgan Ironwolf, or a wraparound of the Erol Otus pic from the back pages of the original Fiend Folio that had a party of adventurers encountering a horned troll. Oh, decisions!

Warduke may have originated in The Shady Dragon Inn, but the above scan is taken from the adventure XL-1 Quest for the Heartstone. I'm not sure if that particular illustration of Warduke originated in that book, though.

Ah, I wasn't sure where he appeared first - Shady Dragon Inn is the book I have. It's the same piece of art, though.

Nice Ink! Warduke's always been cool in my book, having had the action figure when I was young. Of course, the GM in my current game handed the barbarian the D&D mini of Warduke to represent his character and I was the only one who knew who he was... (they're all 30 or less in age).

Very nice tattoo!

BTW, I noticed you're from Portland. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the tattoo at? I have a couple of tattoos that I got done in Portland.
