Please check out Shadowfoot's Swashbuckler class, which is, frankly, frikkin awesome and WAY better than ComWar's crapfest of a 3 level class.

The Le, you always have some of the best books I can never buy :\ Lookin' good man :)

Being a pirate's all about attitude, not what it says under "Class:" on your character sheet.

I'm going to have to agree that a fighter, rogue, or even cleric or wizard can believably play as a pirate. It is largely a matter of style (though feat/skill/spell selection helps one pull it off. Ship's mage, anyone?)

What the pirate PrCs and the swashbuckler do is help you finesse the rules to allow you to make certain builds that work with the style you want. In other words, they exist to make your life easier. :p

Unorthodox Pirates?

Impossible... pirates are by definition unorthodox...a shark-riding pirate? you've just swapped a fast-fast boat for a fast shark. A... bomber pirate? pirates of the caribbean I. A "noble pirate"? Sandokan? anyone? ;) :p
