Plain Wizard - Viable?

Plain wizard is certainly viable. You can squeeze out more raw power with various combinations of PrC's - just look at the "optimization" discussions - but its a big part of the game masters job to reign in the power-seekers and make sure that everyone has something useful to do anyway. "Power" is not equal to "interesting", or to "fun", or even to "effective".

Whatever you choose, be sure to grab a couple of Reserve Feats from Complete Mage.

I've already decided to take Fiery Burst. What other reserve feat would you recommend?

Reserve and Sudden Metamagic feats really make the coreclass shiny.

I'm a bit reluctant to take a sudden metamagic feat because they can only be used once per day. I'm thinking it might be better to get a metamagic rod instead.

The usefulness of "once per day" depends a lot on how many times a day you are in combat (or need utility spells throughout the day I guess).

Fight only 1-2 times it is extremely useful, 4+ times less so.

Since you already took a damaging feat, an utility one would be nice. I'd go for Dimensional Jaunt (teleport 5 ft./spell level). It is great for repositioning yourself when in combat, or for bypassing some hazards.

Can Dimensional Jaunt be used to escape grapples?

Here's what I have planned so far, let me know what you think.

Gnome Wizard (Evoker) 12

Abilities: 32 pt. buy, the numbers in () are modifiers from items.
Str 6 (lol), Dex 14, Con 16 (18), Int 21 (25), Wis 10, Cha 10

Feats:
Scribe Scroll
1 Luck of Heroes
3 Improved Initiative
5 Fiery Burst
6 Spell Penetration
9 Greater Spell Penetration
10 Dimensional Jaunt
12 Improved Toughness

In our group we don't roll for HP, we take half the HD and add 1, so I get 3 hp per level after 1st. I just figured out my little Gnome will have 97 HP! :D

And for a familiar I'm going to have a rat. Why a rat? Because they make great scouts. Nobody thinks anything of a rat wandering around in a dungeon or sewer. They're everywhere. But an owl or some other animal will raise suspicion. Rats also give +2 fort saves, which helps make up for a big Wizard weakness. And thanks to my character's hp, the rat will have 49 hp. That's one tough rat! :p

I believe so. It's a supernatural ability useable at will. Being (Su), it doesn't provoke AoO, and it's being described as a standard action.

Don't let the mods catching you do that! :p
Erp?

Anyway, my point simply was: plain Core Fighters are sad creatures, compared to plain Core Barbarians and plain Core Wizards, both of whom are awesome.
