Planescape 3.5 petition

You do know internet petitions are totally useless in influencing decisions made by marketing teams, do you?

This petition is merely a waste of time at best, a way to gather email adress for spambots at worst.

Note also that the petition is not something that planewalker is either for or against - they just felt they should mention it since they are the official fansite.

Setting aside any cynicism about the approach (realistic though it may be in this case), the facts aren't on your side about email harvesting... The petition is hosted at a site that runs petitions all the time and has never sold off the address I use whenever I sign one there. Granted, if you choose to make your email address public (not recommended), then any bot that spiders the page can get you, but if you choose to keep it private it stays that way. So far.

That said, I'd also love to see Planescape resurrected, but I agree this method likely hasn't any chance of influencing the people who could make the decision.

I'd love to see a Planescape 3.5e setting released by WOTC, but I've become jaded over the whole online-petition thing; probably because I've never seen one actually get results.

This site is dedicated to making a 3e conversion of Planescape, and it's probably the closest we'll see to an actual 3e Planescape setting.

Actually written letters are much more effective than email, as a general rule. I think one typed letter equals 100 emails or something like that, as far as how much influenced it can carry.

I love Planescape, it is my bread and butter. But, you know, I don't really want WotC to work on it again for the new edition. When 3E came out, I was all for the rebirth of Planescape under WotC, but looking at the current state of WotC right now, I can't say that PS products they put out would be in the best Planescape tradition.

I mean, who is left there who worked on the origional? If you look at the Planewalkers Handbook, in big letters at the bottom is "by Monte Cook." And, he ain't there no more. Looking through my old PS material, I havn't heard of anything by a lot of these people in anything recent, although I might be missing something. David "Zeb" Cook (no relation to Monte) is now freelancing, and he's on a lot of my PS credits. I dunno, I'm just wary of them messing with my favorite setting.

And Faction War never happened. LALALALALALALALALALA

They might be useless, but you never know. Buisnesses are in it to make money no matter what they publicly say. If they see a market where they can make some, especially if they produced that particular piece of the marcket before. Why not exploit it and fill their pockets a little more.

I think SS has done a good job with Ravenlof. If they could work out a deal with WoTC then there might be a chance. And maybe we can get Monte to accually do it under Malhavoc Press since it id also owned by White Wolf. That is paraphrasing the petition, but that is how I feel as well.

Totally agree with that.

And I'm agreement with ThirdWizard, above. I'm not interested in a 3.x update for Planescape... all the original PS designers are long since gone, and I'm not particularly into WotC's new "revisionist" philosophy (like what they did to 3.x FR... great production values, but crap content thanks to a whole boatload of retconning and continuity problems - though the newer FR stuff like Unapproachable East and Underdark is pretty good, so the future of FR looks good again). In any case, I don't want that to happen with PS.

Besides, I own all the PS books anyways, and I'm not keen on buying regurgitated material. IMO, a monkey on a rocket-powered unicycle can update PS material (what hasn't been updated already!) quickly and easily.

Not that I really think that this was your intention, but I can see that you've never really tried to fully update a setting comprehensively and completely (and not the lame type of conversion you would come up with using WOTC's little conversion guide either). If it really were that simple, there would already be dozens of conversions of each of the 'dead world' settings that TSR produced. As it stands, that is certainly not the case. Most conversions are trite, unbalanced, unweildy things that I wouldn't allow into my game if someone paid me to play them (well, okay, I'm lying about the payment thing, but you get the idea). I'm hesitant about the Planewalker.com conversion, but so far I like the stuff they've come up with.

As for the petition, good luck, if that's really what you want. Personally, I'd rather see WOTC keep their hands off of what the public currently has access to for free. I sunk a few hundred into the PS line (missing only 2 books) and would rather not sink a few hundred more into it when Planewalker.com is making a (hopefully) decent conversion for no charge except the cost to print out a few choice pages or two.

As for a 3rd party publisher getting access to the PS line, there's little chance of that. PS doesn't have enough market appeal to warrent the cost of the liscense and the hassles of having WOTC publish the core book.

You would be far better off doing 2 things: starting a letter writing campaign similar to the one being done by the fans of Greyhawk (although it has currently netted them only a stale negative reply from WOTC) or by contributing something to the PS community that is currently working on their conversion by offering critiques and contructive criticism.
