D&D 5E Planeswalker's Guide to Theros

I updated the OP to include ALL links to MtGs Theros short stories, there a lot of them, some are in two parts. I also put in links to the two novels, Godsend 1 and Godsend 2, the Kindle versions are very cheap, cost me a little over 2 bucks each Canadian, so you should be able to buy them even cheaper in American money.

Enjoying this material, but am I the only one who finds Heliod and the Bident utterly hysterical. They scream "This can be trademarked, THIS CAN BE TRADEMAAAAAAAAAARKED!!!" in the same ludicrous way as Age of Sigmar's "Aelves". Plus Heliod sounds like Helios has a cold, and the Bident just wow, it's practically Rick and Morty-level.

The Magic guys are pretty upfront about that, as a rule: more important to have trademarkable material when the entire game is based on imagery. The second Magic Setting, "Rabiah", has specifically been stated to be off limits for futureagic sets because they just used actual Middle Eastern folklore rather than trademarkable new material.

Okay having read all the Theros stuff, and I mean all of it, I've realized coming up with monsters might actually be harder then usual because most of Theros' monsters types match up perfectly with MM monsters.

Monster types that will have to be in MOoT would be Archrons, Constructs, some kind of Nyxborn (prediction Nyxborn will be Celestials or a subtype like Titan), Nymphs, Flying Sirens (as opposed to the usual aquatic D&D Sirens), Theros Lamias, Nosden(The Returned), Eidilons, Demigods, Titans, Mythic Monsters (there are three of them), Phoenix, Leonin. Plus maybe specific individual creatures as well beyond the Mythics like Leonin King Brimaz, and monsters variations like different types of Chimeras.

Even Ravnica had that problem, actually.

Even Ravnica had that problem, actually.

Ravnica at least wasn't as tied to Greek Mythology as much, so there was less over lap and in fact there were a bunch of Ravnican monsters that should have been in the book IMHO, but weren't.

Still the setting that would be richest in terms of unique monsters would IMHO be Ikoria which just came out. They really pushed the evelop with that one outside the usual creatures. The problem with Ikoria is it only has humans for the most part, no Player race options, a problem shared with Innistrad.

One possible solution for these two worlds would be a bunch of Variant human options. Or to have a MtG MM style book.

If not from the lack of races issue, Ikoria would be perfect once it gets a second set. Given that some of the monsters are sentient, you could maybe make the first none humaniod/Centaur PC races. Or use the evolution mechanic to create new weird humaniod races.

This is also why I voted Amonket in that poll, although obviously Zendikar will come first. Amonket has a bunch of cool races already, although I would add a cat race to the next set, and maybe a playable Mummy race some how. The only issue Amonket has is that it needs to expand the setting beyond the first city and dead with it's dead almost completely dead Pantheon issue. Healing Amonket from it's curse or partially lifting it could allow for that.

Or you could just do something really crazy and have an Eldrazi or something slam Amonket right into Theros, fusing the two planes together. Having a war between Theros' Gods and Amonkets could be really freaking cool, even if the fusion of planes is just temporary.

I don't think New Phrexia will get the D&D campaign treatment because pretty much no one but Phrexians are left, but if they invade another plane, it becomes a possiblity of getting them as monsters in another setting.

I found out in issue Dragon+ 31 that the Leonin in addition to be bigger and stronger then Tabaxi, have a roar mechanic. I also learned they considered making Satyr's darker, but went with the lighter more party loving aspect. There is something called a Nadir Kraken which is more powerful and unique then a regular Kraken and Kraken's are usually locked within a particular range to keep them from destroying civilizations. There is also a two headed snake in the game.
