Plastic Coins

I was at an iParty store today and saw some gold colored plastic coins that might be useful as gaming props. They were $4 for a pack of 144. They also had some multu-colored Chanukah coins that were $1.50 for 36 count. Both of these might be seasonal. The Chanukah coins did have six-pointed stars on them...

go to

go to orientaltrading.com you can buy them real cheap there, and if you want to get real crazy buy some gold leaf, spray them with glue and wrap them, instant goldpiece.

Heck- go to Mardi Gras (or a store that supplies to the Krewes) and get some of the dubloons- they're made of metal (aluminum, I believe) so they have a nice ring to them, and come in gold and silver, as well as colors like blue, green and burgundy (all metallic)- perfect for coinage made from exotic alloys.

I must say that most plastic coins don't look very real. I did find this:

1.75 euro the bag, don't know how many coins. They do look 'real'.

The bags with 144 gold coins are available around here, but cost 7.50 euro (compared to the $3.95). Shipping from the US is possible, but it needs to be at least $200. What do i need 10.000 plastic coins for (add to that shipping and taxes)?

I have been looking at some other options, custom made coins, but that ain't cheap either (but can be very kewl!). I have also seen an option for metal custom coins, i might consider this if the plastic coins are usefull for the game...

The suggestion to use fake/toy/plastic coins as in-game props is an interesting one that I've been considering since it's come up several times recently and RPG specific products are available for the purpose. I think the biggest obstacle I have with it is that it would be fine if the PC's only ever carried and used a small coin purse of cash, but they carry hundreds, even THOUSANDS of coins especially when leaving dungeons. With that the fun of doling out coins or chips, and using colored plastic and glass beads and baubles for gems fails. If I'm gonna do this I'd want it to be the ONLY accepted means of tracking money for the PC's since to do otherwise would only invite confusion: "Okay, I now have another 37 gold tokens but I spent 3,416 gold pieces on equipment, so I'll adjust the WRITTEN total on my character sheet by this much, and hand back 'x' number of tokens, 3 blue beads, 1 red bead, and take on 4 new clear beads to make change, and now my accounts SHOULD be correct except I seem to have dropped one of my brown beads into the shag carpet and we don't have enough poker chips to go around so we're using actual pennies right...?"

While it would be fun to see how players handle carrying 10,000 gp home for the night, it would get old fast. I would suggest that you have gold 'bars' of 100/500/1000 GP. These could be actual 'bars' painted gold or cards. You could also work with money bags (sown shut and filled with sand) with the same designations.

Mardi-Gras is who I got my coins and some other props through (lapel pin, amulets). Here's their phone number:

1 866 895 3818

They gather up the coins after the event and sell random bags of them. I bought 1,000 for $88.

Be sure to rinse them off in soapy water when you get them since they tend to have dust on them. Otherwise they're awesome.

They also have a website you can find through google.
