We have people willing to step up in our group. I was the DM when our group first formed. After a near TPK that sent the plot line out the window another DM stepped in. There are at least two more people interested in DMing in our group when and if the time comes.

Also being in that group and the current DM, by goal is to hol,d on to the DFMing reigns and never letting go!!

So, the combination of me not having fun and potentially reducing the enjoyment for my fellow players makes me a bad choice to be a player in a long-term campaign. My goal is to continue fixing my GMing weaknesses so that I don't become gameless... :)

Fair enough. I find that playing in the games of others has been one of the best tools for improving my own skills as a GM. But is far from the only tool so good luck with the continued improvement.

Playing in other games has probably helped me as well, unfortunately it has been because I have learned a lot of "what not to do". Playing in a well-run game would probably go a long way toward improving my disposition as a player. I currently do not game with anyone who has a desire to GM.

About 90% of the time that I play RPGs, I'm the GM. Started from the moment I picked up gaming, in fact. A friend's older brother played "Battletech" and my friend listened in and watched a few games and decided that RPGs were sweet. So we went out and bought the beginner's set and he decided that since I was picking up the rules faster I should GM the game. From that moment until 2 years ago, literally EVERY game I played I did so as the GM.

My last gaming group, I had two guys totally new to RPGs who ended up becoming the core of my gaming circle. I could pretty much depend on them to be up for anything ... Grim Tales, D20 Modern Dark*Matter, D&D, etc. After a while they both decided that they'd like to get into the GMing side of things, and they were both really quite good at it. One ran pretty masterful short arcs of both D&D and d20Modern, and he got very into the whole "GMing" aspect of things. It was great to see some folks take the leap into running their own games.

I'm not sure how easy it is to just come to it unprepared, though. I.E. if five guys sat down with the 3 core books and looked at them, if the proper GM would naturally arise from the situation and if the books would provide him with enough help to run the game.

I really should pick up the boxed game to see how they handled it.
