Playability of older edition modules in 3E

Early 1E modules were often written for a group of 6-10 characters! That's a big difference compared to how 3e games are normally played.

Generally, you have to pay attention to what the encounter levels are of the 1e modules during conversion.

Cheers!

Old modules are generally very playable (if you do the conversion). The higher the mod, the more work, though it also depends on the monsters involved (Dragons spring to mind).

I personally enjoy doing the conversions. It's fun (for me) to take 1e monsters and characters and see how best to reflect them in 3e terms. It's best IMO if you take key npcs and add prestige classes, feats, etc to make them appropriate.

One thing, if you are converting Basic or Expert modules, I would highly recommend subtituting monsters to give them more diversity and make encounters more appropriate. Remember that those modules were limited to the very small monster sections found in the Basic/Expert Rulebooks (Unlike AD&D which hada separate Monster Manual and several sequals). For example, you see Medusas being placed in several modules where there's no particular reason for them.

I use alot of old modules, they're the greatest! Usually I spend some time doing some prep work, inserting notes, making adjustments, and converting the major encounters (especially spellcasters).

But I also do additional adjustments on the fly during the game, to properly balance the encounters against the party.

I also make sure to make a few major alterations to the adventure beforehand, to throw off anybody that may have read (or played) the module, so that they can enjoy it anew.

Tomb of Horrors I converted and ran (actually made it a bit lower level too..). Naturally I changed a few things around to make it balanced, and fun. Therefore it wasn't endless "save-or-die" traps (actually the module isn't really like that to begin with, it's alot more "typical" than people give it credit for being). But of course I did include plenty of highly hazardous situations.... :]
