Player and monster tactics

Some other ideas if they are really reckless if for them to get crushed by some oppenents but not killed. Tie them up as prisoners in an orc cave somewhere, and have a npc party of more powerful adventurers come and save them. Before they get saverd, lay on some nasty orc, maybe some rotten food for rations, sleep deprivation (have an orc guard wake them up everytime they sleep), and a little light torture unless you're running a VILE game, but it did not sound like it to me. This should knock some sense into them, and should cost them some money as well. Broke and humble, but not dead, should give them some sense of proportion.

for the players:
essentially there are front liners and the support personel.
the front liners wade into combat
the support personel cast spells or use missile fire to help bring down the enemy.

for the monsters:

kobolds- use scorpions, throwing them and makes for ability damage that the players never think about.
kobolds like using their tunnels, made for their height, anyone else of medium size will need to bend over or crawl through the tunnel. great for bramble mazes with kobolds stabbing at the pc's through the bramble with spears. small hand or foot size pits with sharp spike pointed up. slows down someone's movement.

kobolds survive being the runts of the humanoid races. they have a big chip on their shoulder and are usually LE which makes them more militaristic than the orcs. (at least in 3rd edition). Have units of kobolds, like 10 kobolds with a leader that is a level 1 character, most likely rogue though sorcerer would be possible as well.
all 10 kobolds has some sort of missile weapon and would do flanking fire from two different positions without firing at each other. the rogue would probably eye to see who is the weakest of the group and try to separate him/her and have the rest of the kobolds follow after and take him down.

another great tactic. Kobold unit of 10 with 1 leader harrass pc's with a running fight with short bows.
second unit of kobolds circle around and steal their horses.
later that night when the pc's are resting and cursing their badluck, they smell horseflesh cooked.

Hope this helps.

Here's a sneaky thing: two fighters, both with shield and weapon, let's call them 1 and 2. 1 attacks, while 2 does Aid Another to add +2 to 1's AC. The next turn, 1 gives Aid Another for 2's AC, while 2 attacks. Repeat the process. Especially annoying if both have Tower Shields, to give themselves cover when not attacking.

Three warriors standing abreast. One has a reach weapon, while two have medium melee weapons. When someone approaches, the one with the reach attacks, and when they step within fighting range of all three, the one with reach takes a 5' step back, while the other two Flank.

*sniff* Kyramus, beautiful.

Remember, kobolds set traps. Traps in their tunnels, traps around ambushes, traps to keep Meleers and their ranged men seperate.
Ditto for what Kyramus said, about short tunnels, traps within the tunnels, and ranged attackers. Kobolds have darkvision, so they could install oil traps hidden in the ceilings of their tunnels, made to go off when the heat of a torch passes under them.

Humanoids who keep pets, or use things like a wasp nest. Throw that in the middle of camp. :)

Murder holes in the ceiling of a dungeon is good. Any creature with a spear or ranged weapon, or bubbling oil/acid just pouring down through the murder holes ontop of people

How can I teach them survival instincts without killing them off several times?

Non-lethal combat.

Barfights are my favorite (: but, with 3e, you can run a carnival "contest of skill" scenario, including "exhibition matches". Toss in some betting (watch a player's reaction when everyone else at the table bets **against** him!), and you can probably do both in the same game night! (:

Referee: "In this corner, in the blue trunks, weighing at 395 pounds, the town champeen... Harry the Horrible!!! And in this corner, in the now brown trunks... that guy!!!"

Cedric.
aka. Washu! ^O^

Have them fight some good enemies. Or atleast, those who aren't looking to take their enemy alive. Using weapons enchanted for Subdual damage, Monks, etc, etc.

non-lethal??

slavers.

They come in. they drug, subdue, etc. Drag them off to a pirate ship and sent sail to the island that they are going to be auctioned off to.

subduing someone with a weapon has a -4 to their attack, which makes the enemy most likely try to disarm the PC's first. Or use some sort of paralytic or sleep poison.

<grins> I love kobolds. They are like rothweilers in reptilian humanoid form. You can train them as a pack or just as a vicious lil mf. kobold level 1 barbarian. hehehehe oohh ohhh kobold fighter with riding skill and mounted combat on a boar with a lance. lol.
