I used to give out bonus XP for a backstory, but gave it up about 15 years ago. Partly because 3e doesn't do too well with mixed-level groups, but mostly because I realised that it's really its own reward - the players who enjoy doing that sort of stuff will do so, and will enjoy doing so; the players who don't will see it as a chore at best, and who needs extra chores from a leisure activity?
