I'd just advice you to let him have all the fun that he can. It's a bit too early for rule governed play. When I play chess with my little-cousin he makes up his own pieces and moves. Coins usually beat queens.

Have you considered the back of your hand?
What, and draw pretty pictures on it? Does that still work on 4 year olds? :p

Edit: little-cousin? What's the right term for your uncle's grandchild?

Sounds like it's time to introduce him to Calvinball and Fizbin!

"You must spread gratitude around before tipping your hat to pawsplay again."

Man, I've been getting that message so much lately with so many people that I wish it had variations.

Chide your son for his insufficiently close reading of the 1e AD&D Players Handbook, and renew his familiarity with page 8 of that splendid tome -
THE REFEREE IS THE FINAL ARBITER OF ALL AFFAIRS OF HIS OR HER CAMPAIGN.

If the tad remains recalcitrant then I would urge you to follow the advice on page 110 of the Dungeon Masters Guide regarding troublesome players -
Simply put, ask them to leave, or do not invite them to participate again.

I gather that the young one - gasp! - hasn't read these worthy tomes yet, which is clearly negligence on your, S'mon's, part. :)

Let him read PHB, DMG, and MM of 1e and administer a test of competence. Make it clear to him that he needs to gloriously pass the test to earn the right to wrest control of the game from you.

While showing interest and creativity is a good sign, your son is clearly playing an inofficial perversion of the Real Game. This path leads to damnation and it your task to set him straight!
