On the other hand, that's the only method of healing he has, and he needs to worry a lot about being caught in the cleric's field of fire. Turn Undead's not so great when a PC is one of them... Our campaign's a bit high on the power scale for our level, but within that context it's worked pretty well.Yikes! Regen 10? Pretty crazy!

Rituals performed in D&D don't necessarily work in real life.
And besides, if he doesn't come back as a lich, it will tarnish the reputation of D&D even further.
Not that actually coming back as a lich would be any better.
Regardless, friends don't let friends attempt to perform the Ritual of Endless Night and store their soul in a phylactery.
