Players guide to faerun?

Y'know, I realize that this book is really just the FRCS book rehashed and revised for 3.5e, and the whole "player's guide" angle is just a thin pretext to keep indignation down to a minimum. Still, it's a little aggrivating to see a player's guide that contains monster stats.

I'm going to buy it, but I'm not sure that I want my players to.

See my post above, all the monsters got cut from it so you don't have to worry. It's not really a rehash of the FRCS, they're only updating the things that need updating, so if it's in the books something's probably changed about it. They're also using it to update the timeline.

I hope they release the cut stuff as a web enhancement. They haven't been doing that enough, lately. :(

All this great stuff is getting cut, and we get may get perhaps a few pages...

What's wrong with the +2 on 2 feats?

Some people feel that a single generic feat giving +2 on any 2 skills, and for which the player could come up with some rationale for linking, would be better than a number of separate feats.

I happen not to agree with that philosophy, although I do understand it.

I like having specific feats that link 2 skills; it gives me different ideas about how to build the character's behavior around the bonuses. Most such feats emphasize a trait, and that trait leads (me) to better define my character.

This goes doubly for the feats in the FRCS, since most if not all of the +2/+2 feats are regional, and thus emphasises the different characteristics of people from different places. That is, Sembia is known for its merchants, and thus people from Sembia can take the Silver Palm feat that gives +2 to Appraise and Bluff.

If they wished to have one's home region influence the character's skills, they could have added regional class skills or the like. But the +2/+2 feats seem to be stupid copy/paste. You take the original (being Alertness) and switch skills to meet some regional stereotypes.
We saw those feats in the FRCS, now they return in the Player's Guide, and i don't expect them to be reworked in any way. Those feats are just wasted space for me, who i own the FRCS (as, i guess, most other potential buyers do).

But the loss of Thunderlance weighs much MUCH heavier for me. That's been one of my favorites :)

It has a lot more stuff in it, than I thought at first, I'm glad there's some 3.5 conversions of new monsters from the Realms. I'll get it when I get some cash! *must have* :)

True, but feats already have requirements. Adding a Regional requirement to feats is a simple extension of the existing design. Skills, especially the mix of class and cross-class skills, are different. Making some skills class skills because of background is a fine idea, but needs to be used sparingly; in part because there are only a few skills. Also, making a skill a class skill is a much *bigger* potential benefit than giving a small fixed bonus.

What loss ? Just because it is not in the Players Guide does not mean it is removed from the game. That *could* be an indication that the version printed elsewhere required no adjustment for 3.5 (in the WotC staff's opinion).
