Players roll a defense against NPC/Monster attacks.

This seems like a neat approach. What would happen when the PC rolls a natural 20 on his defense check? IMO, something cool should happen just like with an attack roll.

Not sure if you were referencing my last post or the OP, but I'll bite regardless:

First of all, we didn't quite get to the rooftop crossbow assassin ambush on the PC's last night. That'll happen tonight. I'll post back with PC feedback.

Roll a "1", and not only is the PC hit, and I'll probably say the arrow is lodged (in his leg?) and can't be readily pulled out -- since this will be a highly mobile defense/attack encounter, I will give that PC a -2 movement until he can deal with the arrow (If he just rips it out, he'll take another damage roll). Roll a "20" and.... I was actually going to wing it and see what seemed appropriate. But you asked and it got me thinking. In this case vs. the rooftop assassins, I think I'll let the player spot the assassin and get an immediate ranged attack on him.

In theory a 20 means they're automatically missed and a 1 means they're crit.

A "20" means that they are missed -- a defensive save. A "1" means that they've been crit hit.

I'll give the attackers the standard +11, plus their attack/advantage bonuses. They PC's will have to roll defensively to see if they can top that attack score. So rolling a "20" would be a crit defensive save and for that turn put our fighter's AC at 20+12 (his current bonuses are +12) = 32AC (usually he has a 22AC). Rolling a "1" would be a crit defensive failure and the PC would be hit with some sort of extra thematic damage that hopefully would relate to the defensive nature of the current encounter.
