Playing a wizard at low levels

It kind of balances out, in a sense, because I've also learned from this thread that sleep has a casting time of 1 round (And not 1 standard action).

I think that was one of the stealth changes in 3.5. I admit I didn't know about it, myself, until the past few months, and I've been playing 3.5 since it came out. (Not that we used Sleep a whole lot, anyway.)

There really isn't much more than what has been said, but one campaign I asked my DM if I could have a rod of ray of frost which could be used every round instead of starting cash. He allowed it and let me start with half the cash anyway. It isn't over-powering, but it is a ranged touch attack with no save and can still crit. It was a decent disruption attack and fairly constant damage dealer.

And lastly, don't get too attached to your guy because, honestly, even if you do absolutely everything right as a 1st level mage you've still probably only got about a 1 in 3 chance of survival. But, on the plus side, if you do manage to survive you'll likely have picked up a lot of tricks about tactics, problem-solving, and outside-the-box thinking that'll serve you well no matter what class you're playing, plus when you finally hit 5th level and drop your first fireball or lightning bolt it'll feel so much sweeter knowing you've earned it :)

Ouch - You either have a brutal DM or are playing 1E wizards!

This is complete cheese for Diviners.
Three divination spells a day is complete cheese? Yeah, they don't get hurt that bad by picking a whole second restricted school but they're getting three extra divination spells per level a day.

Unless they pile them all onto a few levels, most levels have squat for exciting divinations, to say nothing of having three good choices.

I swear that's what happened in the NWN original campaign. You got a wand of unlimited ray of frost.

Yeah, as I recall it did, but this was back when 3.0 first came out. I created/found/bought items that included 0 level spells; they were cheap and very useful (at least at lower levels).

Maybe you DM will allow you to switch out the normal Melee based Smite with Ranged Smite, which, I think, can be found in the Complete Divine as a feat.
Elf paladin substitution levels from Races of the Wild does the same thing. :)

Three extra spells. At the cost of only two schools, whereas other schools demand the loss of three schools. Knowledge is power.
