Playtesting vs a .5 Edition

OK yes when you say External playtesting 3e likely got more external testing. The jump from 2nd to 3e was massive. This jump is big but not that big.

Uh... we did get a 3.5 because there were things that needed to be changed because there wasn't enough playtesting on that edition right?

There is no such thing as 'enough' playtesting. Just throwing more people at a product does not equate to quality coming out the other end. How it's done is just as if not more important. Everybody says they want to playtest but from my experience most are not good at it. Everybody somehow knows that it's not being done right or they could do a better job.

I do find it very funny that we have one group complaining that there is not enough information on 4th edition out at this point to make a decision and another group that's just sure they know exactly what's going on and everything is horrible. I believe if we brought those two groups together they would cancel each other out with a small *pop* noise.

Funny! But also just a wee bit cynical. Looking at this board and talking to gamers at various events, I've found that most people are cautiously optimistic, and more than a few are downright excited about 4E.

Given the (in my opinion, appropriate) lack of details, "cautiously optimistic" or "complaining about lack of info" are the most reasonable responses.

I am not disagreeing with you. I've talked with a lot of gamers as well (from right after the announcement was done at Gencon to my local gaming store last weekend). Cautiously optimistic is the general attitude I'm getting back (unlike 2nd edition where people were just down-right excited due to the stagnant nature of 2E at the time).

I have no problem with that group of people at all. I just find it humorous that both groups can exist at the same time (we are optimistic but don't know much yet vs. we know more then the writers do).

The lack of details at this point does make total sense as well as there not being an SRD yet. Things need to be finalized before they go out to the public. You want to rile up the masses once with a change not once for a change and then over and over and over again as your revise it.

I don't think that is true. I believe we got 3.5 due to a shakeup from the Hasbro buyout of wotc and because of the D&D minis game.

Man, I hate to be compelled to say it, but... holy murgatory, that's just ridiculous. It's the downright craziest thing I've seen written about 4E. "This jump is not that big"? With all the radical changes to classes, never-before seen races, alignments, planes, everyone with same BAB & saves, total demolition of the entire spell/magic system, etc.?
