Please help with a "fiery" combat

Great suggestions guys! I love the various magma ideas, and will definitely have to steal those. I hadn't really considered the basic environmental problems a burning city would present (smoke inhalation, oxygen deprivation) - my players are going to hate me. The final confrontation could be a TPK, especially if the group expends a lot of resources getting to the BBEG. He's using an artifact that opens a rift to the plane of fire, and allows him to command whatever is drawn through, but I may need to bring in reinforcements in the form of good-aligned fire beings anyway. Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

Look into the Magma paraelementals from the Manual of the Planes. Adding on the Thomil template from Unapproachable East gives them a cool engulf ability that will provide a fear of being enveloped by oncoming lava.

The smoke paraelementals could be useful to you as well. Also the previously mentioned elemental template.

Do you have either the Monster Manual 3 or the Eberron Campaign Setting?

Look up a template called "Living Spell."

Basically, it takes any spell which has an area of effect (rather than individual targets) and makes it into an ooze, which inflicts its spell on anyone it is engulfing.

Now, throw a couple Living Fireballs, Living Burning Hands, and Living Firestorms into the mix. Have fun. :D

Well, things were pretty interesting throughout last night, though I think the group would have preferred to teleport straight to the BBEG rather than slog through the dangerous city streets. They first flew across the lake to land at a small dock. They were a bit taken aback by the carnage around them, but had little time to react as flaming rocks smashed around them from the sky, from which emerged several fire elementals. They were brimming with fire resistance, which helped, and had little trouble dispatching these things. Various dangers chipped away at their protections, and they dealt with backdraft/explosions quite well when they had to enter one of the buildings. They crossed a moat of magma - several flew, while others skipped across crumbling stone slabs. The conflaguration ooze ambush happened in the middle, but the two party members who crossed on foot had ridiculous ACs - still one did take some "Fire in the Blood" damage, which had the desired frightening effect (they had seen a native of the city die horribly in this way). They made it to the other side, and as a whole were relatively unscathed, but the sorceror is now quite low on spells. We stopped 3/4 of the way to the BBEG, as the combats took a long time. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - it made the trek through the city far more exciting than what I had originally planned.

Stupid dragon. Stupid "lesser globe of invulnerability"-having dragon! *petulant*

The game was fun, though. Especially when little old sorcerer me telekinetically disarmed the big warrior bodyguard of his cool sword. Of course then he came down and beat me nearly to death unarmed.

Remind me again why a dragon needs a human fighter bodyguard?!

Now now Rangerwickett, Therin's relationship to Ariela wasn't that of a bodyguard - and do you think for a second that you were going to take down that dragon with your empowered Rays of Enfeeblement?

Ahem.

Long story short everyone - the party forged ahead after gathering together a group of soldier-allies. They staged a nice assault on the BBEG's lair (an old red dragon using alternate form and heavy duty disguise magic to appear as a scarlet-haired female elf - long story). Unfortunately, the enemy was given heads up to this assault, and planned their own devious counterattack. Illusory flames and melting stones (Efreeti permanent image is nice) met the first decoy wave of their assault. As planned, they retreated, and thought they drew away a huge force of fire elementals (all illusions). The second less beefy wave of PCs charged in against the remaining Efreeti guards (2 of them); however, a fighter and a former now-evil PC ambushed this group. Things would have gone quite poorly if the 1st group hadn't realized they were fighting an army of illusions and returned. As it was, the fighter was, as Ryan said, disarmed, but still feisty with his fists. The elf/dragon called off her minions and welcomed the group into her temple/lair, where she held hostages and the MAJOR ARTIFACT (booming voice). The group survived long enough to planeshift away with the MAJOR ARTIFACT, and with only 2 deaths (plus a handful of allies)! They "conquered" the CR20 dragon (who flew away), rescued the Sultan, and sealed up the MAJOR ARTIFACT for a long long time. Exciting stuff (promises rich reward to the PCs). See this link to hear how the dragon fight went.
