"Thats' a 95% sure way of doing ~121.5 damage on your power critical attempt."

At which point I would tell you that the power critical is the broken part, not the smite.

not too many paladins go the Improved Critical/ Power Critical approach.

I'm shocked at how few people who discuss paladin powers are not aware of the Smite spell in R&R.
I don't remember exactly the duration, but I think it lasts a long time. It's not one round, I know that.

Your point about the Smite spell is a good one, but our group doesn't use that book.

I am shocked that Improved Critical + Power Critical is not a standard Paladin progression. They both have superb synergy with Blessed Weapon, and nice synergies on top of that with Smite, Power Attack, and Expertise.

Certainly Improved Critical is going to get more use than a mounted combat feat chain.

Power Critical is something I'd rather not have existed.. Power Critical is kinda like getting a smite attack once per day, but as long you're fighting something that you have a decent chance of hitting, it's much better than an existing smite attack will ever be.

It's that much worse when the character with it uses it for a x3 or x4 weapon. And can cast True Strike.

I think the Smite spell is one of those "1/round per level or until discharged" spells. I don't think that it actually gives you multiple smites with one casting. Though honestly, it's also one of those things that probably shouldn't exist; any cleric could easily outstrip a paladin of equal level through the use of that spell, if they felt like it.

This is the widest spread on votes I think I've ever seen. This feat got everything from a 1 to 10 and averages 4.94

Even divine might didn't get a 10 and it was a far far better feat as its final rating showed.

Power Critical is one of those feats that isn't very useful unless you abuse it, so the only time its chosen is when someone plans to abuse it.

I voted 10

I voted a 10 for extra smiting.

I thought about the ideal feat progression for a Paladin and came to the following conclusion.

Human Paladin
1: Weapon Focus: Long Sword, Power Attack
3: Divine Might
6: Extra Smiting
9: Improved Critical: Long Sword
12: Power Critical: Long Sword
15: Extra Smiting
18: Extra Smiting

There are some assumptions: I was assuming a campaign where your Paladin doesn't get to fight from horseback all the time. I was also assuming a campaign where you might someday find a holy sword. I was also assuming you are playing with only the WOTC books (non-WOTC books have other feats that are nice).

If you have no chance of ever finding a holy sword, you might pick a weapon other than long sword (or substitute additional extra smitings for the weapon feats). If you plan to usually fight on the back of your mount (a campaign that focuses on tournaments or battlefields), then you will definitely want the mounted feats. If Divine Might requires a standard action to activate, you might drop it and trade it for something else (i.e. if you are not playing with the FAQ interpretation).

If you are going EPIC, extra smiting is incredibly useful, because of the way it multiplies the EPIC Great Smiting feat (the only feat an Epic Paladin will ever want to choose).
