Req: Bab +5, Weapon Focus(any melee), Alertness, Search 4, Sense Motive 4, Spot 4

Class Features: Harms Way, Defensive Strike, adn Deflect Attack.

So, rate it on:
1) How well it stacks up with core classes.
2) How often a PC or NPC will go with this class.
3) How 'fun' it is to play this class and how much this class adds to the game.
Each is worth 3 points, with an additional point that you could add for Misc. reasons.

All in all average: The concept is quite cool, and has it's niche, but the class is only just one ability and three bonuses, that go up alternately. The Bodyguard from d20m is made better.

A great class. Discounting the ability to get free attacks, you get 2 good saves, d12's, free AC, fighter BAB, and a good skill list. Great stuff, every fighter with a few spare levels should think about picking up Alertness, just in case.

I kinda like Devoted Defender. In my campaign, I created a special guild for them that trains DDs alongside wizards so that, upon graduation, DDs become bodyguards for low-level spellcasters, freeing wizards from having to take so many combat spells. They make good adventuring combo teams.

Devoted Defender is a little too powerful in my opinion.

Better abilities than the Dwarven Defender PRC and the PRC is much easier to get into.

Of course, almost all Builder Book PRCs are more powerful than the DMG PRCs, so we shouldn't be surprised by PRC inflation.

I voted Very Good -- if you want to play a defensive character type, its hard to go wrong with Devoted Defender.

After the first three levels of Devoted Defender, the remaining abilities are quite linear and can then be improved by leveling up in other classes anyway.

I think this ""bodyguard archtype"" prestige class would be better represented using a 5 level prestige class.

lvl // BAB // Fort // Ref // Will // AC // Special

1 // +1 // +2 // +2 // +0 // +1 // Harm's way
2 // +2 // +3 // +3 // +0 // +1 // Defensive strike
3 // +3 // +3 // +3 // +1 // +2 // Deflect Attack (once per round)
4 // +4 // +4 // +4 // +1 // +2 // Combat Reflexes
5 // +5 // +4 // +4 // +1 // +3 // Deflect Attack (once per round + dex mod)

.......or something like that.

I agree. It's a very powerful prestige class. It has a good concept and its abilities relate well to that concept but the abilities are very good on their own even if a player completely ignores the concept.
