Plot bunny for magic boots

Here's a plot bunny I thought up last night. I hope someone finds it useful.

The setup: the party finds a pair of magic boots (or gloves or bracers or ...), the mage casts Identify, and the result comes up something useful. A PC duly tries them on and hilarity ensues as a curse is inflicted. If the PCs think to look more closely, they will spot that while the boots are very similar they are not, in fact, a pair, but two halves of two pairs. The hunt is then on for the other halves. Casting Identify on each boot in turn will also spot the issue and tell which is which.

I thought you meant literal bunny...

These magic boots appear to be lined with rabbit fur and detect as Boots of the Winterlands. While worn, the boots do provide an endure elements (cold) effect.

The curse becomes apparent when the wearer enters an area of snow for the first time - The wearer finds that his tracks appear to be those of a snowshoe rabbit. Any person or creature who was not present at the time of the curse's manifestation perceives the wearer to all appearances as a snowshoe rabbit. While seemingly harmless, the tracks appear (and smell) genuine to any tracker and will tend to attract predators of all kinds (including Rangers looking for a meal).
