I'm to run a game tonight and I thought I'd have enough time to prep but it's running late. Figured I'd try for the power of the net/enworld...
Party is level 3 with some weird twists (no magic items other than a healing potion each, all martial classes, 1-2 bonus feats each and each player is also playing a level 7 minion) Probably effectively level 3.5. Probably 5 players.
Here we go. Group is coming down from the North to help with something. They are staying in the same Empire but effectively changing nations (laws and language are different). The world is pretty low magic with undead existing as well as Goblins, Orcs and most PC races. The party is a mercenary company who is actually in the employ of a Duke from the North to spy on the South.
So what's the first adventure? The land in the South is mostly farming done by Kobold slaves and the military needed to keep the slaves in line. The weather is bad so not many people choose to live there.
Current plan is that a part of the military has gone rogue and stolen a lot of mint oil (currently very high market values) and are working with a group of pirates to get it back to the main part of the Empire (basically we are in the USA and the market is in Europe). The military has thus far been unable to find the thieves, likely because they are either bought off or unwilling to go after their own. The baddies are waiting for better weather so that their pirate buddies can pick up the oil--Fall is apparently bad for ships around here (no idea why, I'll make up something) so it is generally understood the oil is still around.
So what does the adventure look like? What are the encounters? I'd like to visit a plantation just to give them a sense of the place. I could have the baddies be in the swamp and have an alligator encounter or some such (say the baddies have a witch with them that keeps the alligators at bay and causes them to attack others?) But I'm not sure what to do at the plantation or what the overall plot looks like.
All ideas welcome! Encounter specifics are even better.
