Everything's Fine
Not sure why Podcast 205 didn't get an announcement, but wanted to jump on here and comment about it.

First of all, as a former retailer, really enjoyed it. I had toyed with the idea of opening a gaming cafe as an addition to my existing brick and mortar game/comic retail shop back in 2004 - but never pulled the trigger. What Jessica said about "You really have to love working in a cafe" hit home.

Also enjoyed the uniquely English issues raised and one comment Jessica made which is not the case here in California (and perhaps other states in the US) was "it was relatively easy to get a beer/wine license". In California it is both expensive, and not easy. Although beer-wine is cheaper than hard liquor.

Also very interested to hear that a lot of the customers were not gamers at all. And huge props to Jessica and their partner Mark to commit to paying their staff a minimum wage.

I had questions such as...
  • Was it only board games supported in the cafe? Or all games (CCGs like Magic, RPGs, miniature games like Warhammer, even LARPS)?
  • What was the most popular game people played?
  • How were sales in the retail portion?
  • Was there ever a conversation of converting the business to a worker cooperative? Here's a model of similar in the US Red Emma's
I guess if I was to open a game cafe today, I'd call it Meeples and Mochas...
Or Games and Ganache

I would like to hear more about games retail on the podcast.

I also really enjoyed the Archlich and Elf take their concerns to Human Resources bit - it was SPOT ON.

Legend
I'm going to listen to this one tomrorow on my walk. Generally speaking, I haven't had a tough time getting my players to try new games in the last 10 or so years. If I own the game, most of them are willing to at least give it a shot. Some of them will even purchase the rule book.
