Point Buy Systems?

Which two cons are you going to. Im thinking of going to Origins and Gen Con but Im unsure as of now.

Marcon and Origins. Both are here in Columbus so it's realy easy. I volunteer at Marcon (as I have for the past 2 years).

Mayby I'll get to Gen Con when it moves to Indianapolis, as that's a straight shot down I 70. ;)

I live in Huntington, WV about 3 hours away. I was just in Columbus about two weeks dropping off my girl friend at the airport. I hope to make it to Origins so I can play some games.

As it gets closer someone (maybe me) will post an announcement on the General Forum to see who's all going and possible try to scedule a lunch or whatnot.

69+D10 would be a min-maxers wet dream. A half-orc barbarian's stats could be 20 str, 18 dex, 18 con, 4 int, 10 wis, and 2 cha with a roll of 5.

The group I play in uses a 30-point buy system.

At that point, the DM has the half-orc barbarian wear a steel-collared leash because he's so ugly and wild-looking that the city's ordinances about keeping dogs on leashes apply. :D

Min-maxing is as fun for the DM as it is for the powergamer. Well, ok, most powergamers don't want their character tied to a post while the party goes into a tavern ("No pets allowed!"). ;)

Here is my character creation guidelines....

Ability Scores: To create ability scores roll 1D10 then add the result of the roll to 70. The total result is your ability points that you may distribute on a one for one basis among your six abilities. Racial bonuses or penalties no longer apply.
When distributing the ability points use the following guidelines: No starting ability score may exceed 16 unless otherwise noted: Dwarves: 18 Constitution Max.14 Charisma Max.
Elves: 18 Dexterity Max. 14 Constitution Max.
Gnomes: 18 Constitution Max. 14 Strength Max.
Half-Orc: 18 Strength Max.14 Intelligence Max.
14 Charisma Max.
Halflings: 18 Dexterity Max. 14 Strength Max.

We don't make characters with below 8-9 ability scores. Mostly we don't make them with below 10 so 69=1d10 point for point works fine for us.

With that said sometimes we pick our scores.

example:

Fighter human
str 16
dex 14
con 15
int 12
wis 13
cha 10

give or take on a few....

I run a Greyhawk campaign and the characters are all 40 to 50+ point buy equivalent in ability scores. This causes all kinds of problems in 3rd edition. I have to increase the strength of the bad guys in order to challenge the characters, and this usually means the lethality rate for them goes way up.

One of the players is going to DM for awhile so I can finally play 3rd edition D&D. When I start a new campaign, I have decided to use the point buy method from the DMG. I think I will use 25 point buy. At the most, 28. This will keep the ability scores in the range that the game was designed for.

Crothian: I think 2 or 3 from my group, including myself, will be coming out for Origins, at least for a day. I will look for the "get together" thread when it gets closer to July. Perhaps we can all have a beer together.

Excellent. Of course I don't drink alcohol, but I'll happily toast with my lemonade. :D
