Well, yes, they do use them as Internet handles, which blurs the line.

Also, most people know of them by their internet handles, rather than by their real names. calling them by their real names might lead some people to not realize the significance of who they are.

Also they introduce themselves in the podcast with their real names followed by their handles.

Also, they were using the handles before the characters in the comic had names. They ended up calling the characters their handles because people want them to have names and were associating them with the creators.

Realizing penny-arcade has been around for 10 years makes me feel oooooooooold.

Too bad they had to lose half the existing D&D customer base to reach out to all those wonderful pokemon players. :erm:

if I use acid-damage on you will you not be able to regenerate?

First, every D&D player I've ever known in my entire life save one person has switched to 4e and been at least accepting if not incredibly satisfied. In addition to this I've seen new groups spawn up and teach players for the first time. The first game I ever ran was 4th edition, and I taught 2 new people how to play D&D for the first time, and the 4th edition rules felt extremely easy to convey to people who were new to P&P RPGs entirely.

I'm sorry that in your circle you perceive to have lost half, but you hardly have the basis to call it half across the board.

Next, there's no need for this high horse crud. There's so much animosity towards things like Warcraft or Pokemon or possibly even Harry Potter. But guess what? Those are the fantasy franchises that define the industry for today's younger people. You may not like it, you may think it's dumb, you may think it's worse than the fantasy that YOU liked when you were a young adult, but too bad.

Even as far back as JRR Tolkein himself, people once referred to the Lord of the Rings as "Wagner for children" because they felt it was a childish derivative of the operas. When it comes down to it, behind all the anime and plush pikachus, the pokemon videogame is a console RPG where people fight battles, gain XP, level up, and pursue a story. Maybe it doesn't jive with you, fine, but it's what is igniting the imaginations of today's young people the same way a D&D novel or Tolkein may have done for generations past.

At it's heart, D&D is a group experience. To a certain extent, WotC has a business interest to sell books, but they also have a business interest and _we_ as players have an interest in seeing new people join the ranks. As much as the old guard may hate it, the story of Gabe (who really isn't that young a person anyway, but follow me) is an example of the way that people who WANT to play D&D at heart discover that such a thing exists. In the end, more players is better for all of us, and a system that is easier to grasp and easier for the Everyman DM to prep for is good. It means more groups formed, more games played, more dice thrown!
