The Amazing Dingo
First Post
Nice. Very nice all, thank you. This thread is really helping.
Silveras, you pointed out one of the oldest and greatest types of strife in the history of the world that had never occured to me: sexism! I know you down play it a little (which I would also do), but its still a great little flavor (and since my PC is a woman, its even better). Thank you very much. I had an order of healing nuns planned and this would be a great little thing to add.
Concerning arcane magic, I was aiming for of a more general disdain of magic by the whole clergy. Of course that does not speak for everyone, but there have been several mages dealing with demons (what kind of mage are you if you don't occasionally do such?). The Church is not quite at the mage's throats, but they take every chance they can to weaken the mages (who serve at the king's order, though have more freedom then any servant of the king, only serving for 6 months and then having 6 months to themselves). Not sure about a Free Thinking type of group, but might have to give it a little consideration.
The Reunionists...another thing I'm gonna have to think about. There is a First Power (similar to Ao in FR (I think thats the power's name in FR)) in the world who is asleep at the present (the LG god is his first 'child'...just like always). Perhaps an outside religion that is constantly nagging the Church the return to the First Power and try to wake him, believing it possible since the LG god is the First Power's first "child".
Something else to mention is that this LG church is the only state-sponsored church. Hence, they have a lot of followers and generally accept the other churches...however, there is the fact that through some ancient means, all divine spellcasters of another god cast their spells as if two levels lower. Hence, the state sponsors the religion, believing the land to be "the choosen land" of the LG god.
PirateCat, I've pondered those and even made a few but was also hoping to hit upon a few theological points. However, you did say one thing that brought me back a little - rivalries. I really ought to bring myself back a little focus on the small things of those rivalries. Thanks.
Also, I do have several different factions based on those spheres (just as Storm mentioned a little later along with Dargoth). I have a healing faction planned, along with a faction that does focus on the Law over the Good (a sect of Judges basically) and a faction of warriors. Its not only the easiest way to do it but also one of the easiest for the Players to follow.
Storm, you are right. Gods have also seemed to be vague and almost circular at times in their logic (at least the interesting ones seem to be...gotta love Sep's 'not all untruths are unequal' line). Certain Divinations, no matter how specific a question, might always be met with certain enigmatic responses, which is leading me to now create a book of these engimatic responses in my head. Its not quite their version of "The Gospel" but rather something more akin to "The Apocrypha" or something with perhaps just a little less acceptance.
And there is one of my heretical groups right there who follow the riddles more then anything else and devote themselves to understanding and unwrapping them (something else I notice that mimics Sep's game, but sometimes the old things work best).
Concerning the interference from another god, that was also something I had considered.
Campaign blabbering in the next section...
In truth, the reason all clerics of another god cast spells as if two levels lower is because the land is cursed by the LG god's first creation. It is sitting under the land, buried beneath the first Well of Souls (there is a Roman flavor to the setting and all Roman towns would build a well of souls where they could contact the dead and as a way the dead could travel to the underworld so they would be less likely to haunt the living). This being cursed the land but, being born of the God, the God's powers are able to slip through this curse. The God hasn't given it much thought - indeed, it hasn't really been brought to his attention. But it's there...and I'm going to make one of the sects a sect devoted to this other ancient power rather then the LG god. Their powers are at the level they should be, so they are accepted into the fold.
Okay...sorry to get side tracked...
Dargoth, not to be rude, but I think I hit on everything you mentioned while blabbering offwards on the previous posts. However, your examples are welcome, especially the Bane example (I wasn't around during 1e, so that is some interesting info).
Any more ideas? Please, keep them coming.
