Poll and discussion: one PC per player, or many?

We run it as one PC per player, but with one exception: If you have a Cohort (via the Leadership feat), then that character is handled by another player that agrees to take the job. You do not play your own Cohort. They're a seperate person and you've got to deal with them as such.

I like, consider it 'yoinked'.

In the first campaign I played in (and in which I still play, 23 years later), most of the players had several characters, usually a variety of different classes and levels. However, no one ever played more than one PC at any one time -- it was sort of a "shared world" campaign, with several different DMs, and not a real strong overarching plot.

So, when we'd start a new adventure, the players would negotiate over which of their PCs they'd play... "Eric (the DM) says it's for 5th-7th level characters, so I want to play my magic-user." "Somebody has to play a cleric." "Do we have a thief?"
