D&D 4E Poll: Turning Undead in 4E...how should it work?

How would you like to see Turning Undead work in 4E?

I'd rather 4e clerics didn't cast spells at all---
How about they take Turn Undead away from the cleric, and give it to the paladin? and take spells away from the paladin, leaving the spell-working to the clerics?

"Like it always has" is a little misleading, because the mechanics of turning vs. hit dice used to be very straightforward. I'd rather it be closer to the way they did it in 1E / 2E -- that is, each undead has a "class" it belongs to. A Wight would be "Class VI" or "Class 6"; if it's Brom Bones, the "Headless Infernal Champion of Orcus" Wight, then it's "Class VII/Class 7" instead. Roll a die, compare it to a chart based off of a simple math comparison formula, and you have your answer in 5 seconds.

I really dislike turning it into spells, and would rather have it a choosable talent instead. As a spell, that means it's unprepared sometimes, and for the clerics who can do it, I'd rather they can do it all the time, instead of having to prep for it, even as an encounter resource.

I chose Like it Always Has with the caveat that they will fix it.

I noticed a lot of people picked scaling damage. That might work if the damage is minimal, but the damage in Complete Divine was too great. We tried this for a single campaign and it effectively gave the Cleric free multiple big Undead Fireballs that did not affect the PCs, but did affect all of the undead. It's just too powerful of an ability. It's many times more powerful than SpellFire (for example) against Undead.

Undead were not a threat unless the DM had 3 or 4 such encounters because they would almost all fall within 2 rounds.

I'd like it to be a battle-ender, rather than a battle-opener.

So, I'd rather it worked off of remaining hit points rather than HD.

Something like: roll 1d6 per Cleric level, add your Cha bonus, and all undead with fewer HP than this number are destroyed or turned.

Mindless undead are destroyed; plot smart undead are turned.

Cheers, -- N

No tables or charts or formulas. Make it a straight will save. The actual "turning" effect could be a set of states that mirror the fear state progression.

It'll never happen. WotC is trying to get away from rolling 13D6.

I think some form of Intimidate will be what they do. It might be Will saves (or Will Defenses), it might not.

I think they are trying to get influencing type effects such as Diplomacy, Intimidate, Suggestion, Turn Undead, etc. to all work similarly.
