Hello!

In lines with the little project that I'm working on (check the .sig), I was curious if any particular villains have influenced your D&D game's BBEG (or d20 Modern, or any other games for that matter).

Does your powerful blackguard dress in black & wield a red sword, ala Darth Vader? Is the evil lich reminiscent of Skeletor or Mumm-Ra? Does your d20 Modern heroes fight against a snake-themed terrorist organization? Are your superheroes battling against evil robots, whether as troops for an evil organization (Cobra B.A.T.s), mechanical shapeshifting aliens (Decepticons), or are they rogue AIs (ala Ultron)?

I've included as many choices as possible, as well as an "Other" choice for characters not listed (MonStar anyone? Miles Mayhem? Kelek? Moltar? etc.), as well as for those other cool characters (Storm Shadow, Zartan, Soundwave, Starscream, Boba Fett, Hordak, etc.).

Despite who you vote for, let us know how these vile villains have manifested in your game(s).

Tiamat: evil monks of the cromatic claw were used for the fallen monestary in B5 Horror on the hill & Old 1e DMG map combo adventure i ran a while back.
Main foe: Bahamut

Set: Wicked god of reptile people.
main foe: Quetzaquatl 'mask' of my campain's chief sun god. ~ i am considering some hostility between the barbarian gods for a nod towards conan.

Orcus: People just don't want to stay dead. Main foes: All who live

Tawil At Umar: The non malignant [CN] mask of Yog Sothoth: key and the gate to all magical power. Offers more magical power than the world needs in hopes of weakening the walls of reality.
Main foe : Marduk, god of the city and pure incantations who bound chaotic magic into the 10 circles[levels] of spells. [cantrip to 9th]

Some of my villains are unique creations. Others of them, I've ripped wholesale from other sources. In my various campaigns, I've had Judge Dredd-like pit fiends, a prison warden somewhere between 1984's O'Brien and the Witch-King of Angmar, a kobold megalomaniac inspired by Dr. Doom and several creatures and powers ripped wholesale from Lovecraft and various Lovecraft pastiches.

Demiurge out.

I put my votes down, but there are some that didn't make this list.

Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII was a big influence. He wore mostly black and carried a katana around, seeming very deviant when it came to matters such as his mother (Ed Gein, anyone?).

Vicious from Cowboy Bebop was a huge influence and, IMHO, is one of the best villians ever.

Cheers!

In one of my campaigns, the BBEG is somewhat Naraku-esque in power and concept.

One of my favorite villains of all time though, is Scorpius from Farscape. LE all the way!

Orcus, Lord Foul, The Nameless One, Sauron, Morgoth, Mephistopheles, the Dark One, Richard the III, to name a few. Some TV stuff I'm sure. Oh yeah Apocalyse as well.

I'm no christian, but how did The Devil not make it onto a list of villains? :)
Cause that was his greatest trick, not getting people to believe in him enough to consider him a source of evil! ;)

Hmmm, a lot of fictional villains, not enough historical or mythological ones. (And way too many comic books - what Marvel did to both Thor and Loki is unforgivable.)

Richelieu.
Hitler.
Stalin.
Mephistopheles.
Faustus.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* Corrected the errant spelling of Mephestwhofooleese... :p

I think the source that most influenced Barsoom's bad guys were the crew from Glenn Cook's Black Company books -- The Dominator, the Lady and the Ten Who Were Taken. And the later gang, too, especially Shadoweaver.

Bad guys who don't always see themselves as bad guys. Who maybe started out trying to prevent something bad, and out of desperation were forced into becoming something terrible. Some are worse than others, and some are just plain bad, but they all have a REASON for doing what they do. Even if it's just a plain old crazy one.
