Actually, The Joker was one of the recurring badguys in a Champions campaign I ran. :)

Two other big influences on me were Lo Pan (Big Trouble In Little China) and Sir Guy of Gisbourne (The Adventures of Robin Hood).

Threadjack coming on strong. Being a big fan of BTiLC I have to ask, what system did you use for that game?

Now that I think about it, ALL my villains were a bit like Mumm-Ra!

Creepy evil guy working behind the scenes while he sends his lackeys (The mutants) to do his dirty work, until he decides to actually make his appearance, and then watch out! It's time for an ass whuppin! ("ancient spirits of evil, transform this decayed form.....")

Miles Mayhem? Miles Mayhem, Miles Mayhem, Mayhem......I've heard this name somewhere before, but I can't place it now......

In addition to several of the choices in the poll I've used a variety of resources for villians. One of my best was a crime lord based on Keyser Soze from The Usual Suspects.

Thanks for the replies! Keep `em coming!

As for the contents of the poll, I was more or less curious about the influence of villains from popular media (for the most part), & not as much as villains from myth, classic literature, history, or real life (though they can be just as inspiring, if not moreso).

For me, a lot of the villains listed above were ones that I saw growing up (b. 1974, BTW), & they definitely have had an impact on my design of villains in my games. For example:

* Skeletor, Mumm-Ra, & Saruman have influenced a lich BBEG that I'm in the process of designing (check the .sig)

* A major villain in past superhero games was an arms dealer named Caliber: imagine Destro (of G.I. Joe fame), but with his entire body covered/transformed into metal, with superhuman strength, genius I.Q., and the ability to fly at sonic speed. My players absolutely feared & detested that villain. :D

* In past superhero games (& for an upcoming d20 Modern game), there has been a evil terrorist organization (ala Cobra, though not necessarily snake-themed). Their leader inevitably wears a battle helmet with a cool mirrored faceplate (ala Cobra Commander's battle helmet).

* Various modern-day games have had a biker/street gang based off of Zartan & the Dreadnoks.

* The Ringwraiths (from LotR) and the Shadowlords (from the Ultima series of games) have been combined for an eerie, unique group of wraiths in my D&D game.

* Yuan-ti have been a mix of the Cult of Set (form the Conan the Barbarian movie), with Cobra-La (of later-era G.I. Joe).

Just a few examples of how popular media has had its influence on my games. But then again, other sources have inspired (& still inspire) my villain concepts as well; for every Skeletor or Cobra Commander, there's a Macbeth or an Iago.

FYI: Miles Mayhem, IIRC, is from MASK (toyline where each person has a high-tech vehicle, along with a high-tech mask/helmet that grants a unique ability).

I voted Vader (every campaign needs a dark bruiser), Sauron (the looming deific figure that's seemingly impossible to defeat), and Other, because there are forces at work in my campaign that aren't as simple as Big Bad Guys. The march of science and hundred-year-old eugenic theory are as close as I can come without spoiling anything for my webcomic...

EDIT: Forgot to mention the other part of Other, which is largely influenced by the Legacy of Kain series of games: Kain. He's really influenced the vampires in my campaign, just with his general attitude towards humans. He's best and he knows it. Who else goes into a battle with magic-plate-mail-wearing, runed-greatsword-wielding elite guardians with bare hands and expects to walk away feeling better afterwards?

It just pains me to see Loki as a villain...he's not evil, he's the ultimate Chaotic. :)

I say to the Gods,
and the sons of the Gods,
the things that whet my thoughts.
By the well of the worlds
there is none with the might,
to make me do his will...

One of the little details that Marvel left out - Thor was one of the few gods that could even stand Loki!

Heck, they went fishing together...

The Auld Grump, not joking about the fishing - look it up...

I had a villain somewhat based off Torquemada from 2000AD's Nemesis the Warlock comic. Greatest comics villain ever (Evar?). :)

When I read this, I thought of Torquemada from History of the World Part 1.

Nothing better than a singing and dancing leader of evil.
