I'm curious to what style of games people run. I've played in both extremely role-playing oriented games where players were forbidden to speak out of character without DM permission and extremely hack n' slash dungeon crawls. This is not meant to be a thread debating which style of gaming is better (that's been done to death) Rather a simple survey to try to see what style of game is dominate amoung board members.
As for me, I enjoy simple dungeon crawls. Why? Simply because they're fun. Combat is used to defeat monsters, and logic is used to overcome puzzles and traps. One doesn't have to be a great role player or charismatic for this style of play. There is always the reward of becoming more powerful through gaining XP and finding treasure, but there is also always tension that your character could meet his demise. The game I'm currently in is more role-playing oriented because of the group I'm with. However, when I DM I prefer to run dungeon crawls.
How about you all?

Well, I'm an old school gamer that role played back then and I role play now. It's a shame that people think all of us are hack and slashers.

A mix of both combat and roleplaying is important.

Having too much roleplaying bores those who don't have the communication skills or the charisma to be doing that sort of thing. Too much combat, though, bores those who get tired of reptitious attacking and dice-rolling and constantly treasure-seeking.

IMHO, combat should be used to further the roleplaying part of the game and should not be entirely random. Granted, random encounters are useful, but overusage of them can get very annoying. However, it's the forwarding of the plot that matters. If that forwarding has lots of combat, lots of roleplaying, or both, then do what fits.

My guess is that noone (well, noone of consequence) will vote for any option but "mixed".

Why?

Because most every game will be mixed, to some extent. Anything else wouldn't be DnD.

i said "mixed," but that's not very illuminating.

if "1" was total hack and slash, and "10" was total storytelling, i'd say i prefer a 4; i.e., mixed but leaning toward combat-intensive campaigns that aren't so deeply immersed in the storytelling.

using movies as an analog, i'd rather be gaming in an action movie than in a psychological thriller.

I like both styles of play and see advantages and disadvantages to both. Sometimes it's fun to get really immersed in the character and sometimes it's fun to mindlessly kill stuff. A campaign with a mix appeals to both of my needs as a gamer.
