Polymorph Self -- Favorite Uses

Lucius Foxhound

First Post
I love Polymorph Self .. it lasts for hours and has a million uses. But what are your favorite monsters to polymorph into? It's tough to find ones with natural abilities you can use ... my faves are Dragon (fly and spellcasting ability), green slime (for slipping under doors), and Umber Hulk (for digging).

What else am I missing?

when you poly into a dragon, i don't believe you get spellcasting ability, and remember the 15 hd restriction

Actually, I meant that as a dragon, a spellcaster could still cast spells (assuming he take his component bag off first).

One of my players polymorphs into a Formian Myrmarch on a regular basis. They can use equipment, talk and do fine motor skills. They have reach, a good Str, Dex and Con...

She has +5 Mithral Breastplate (+10 AC), so with that and her ring of protection she gets her AC up to 40!

10 base
-1 size
+4 Dex
+15 Nat
+10 Armor
+2 Deflection

If she casts haste and shield, she can get it up to 51!!!! (then I just have the monsters grapple her...a half-fiend cloud giand damn near strangled her to death over the weekend (see my story hour).

Just last night the party mage used Polymorph Self to good effect. They were stomping about an old castle trying to chase down a big bad vampire. BBV pops up and Dominates the thief and sends her after the mage. So the mage Polymorphs into the BBV and sends her after the vampire.

Things got very confused at that point. The mage just about got killed by the party cleric and the vampire and the monk teamed up against the thief -- chaos.

So the mage simply made himself appear like the vampire, and said a different order? Considering how he Couldn't use a domination ability.

No, no. The thief was ordered, "Go kill the wizard." Oh, and then there was a protection from evil that prevented the vamp from giving her any other orders. So her last order is "Go kill the wizard."

She looks around for the wizard and what does she see but the vampire. Who says, "The wizard has taken my form. He's over there!" and points across the room at the vampire.

Mage kicks ass on Bluff roll and thief heads off after vampire. Monk arrives late to the party, sees the mage telling the thief to go attack the mage who looks like the vampire, and tries to defend the vampire from the thief. The mage tries to get out of the room, runs into the cleric and gets bashed on the noggin.

Much silly knees-bent running about ensues.

Yes, extreme silliness all over.

End of the evening, party's almost dead, Vampire Dude is likewise almost dead -- really, really almost dead, only one hit point left, and the monk player peers at his character sheet and asks, "What's a Sacred Ofuda?"

For those who don't know, a Sacred Ofuda is a strip of paper you stick to undead foreheads to freeze them undead in place.

Monk becomes instant hero. Sacred Ofuda become PPJ (Permanent Party Joke). "What's Ofuda?" "Don't forget the Ofuda!" "Ofuda me? Ofuda you!" "Ofuda off."
