Pondering RE: Monte Cook / Long-term roadmaps for both Wizards and Paizo

RE: MMO, I highly doubt this will be the case, since currently the DDO (D&D Online) from Turbine has a renewal for at least the next 5 years. You don't undercut your revenue from an already online source by adding another and then competing.

WoW is not a concern for the tabletop industry nor should it be. It's its own entity. Yes, it is highly successful, but, it appeals to a different audience with a much wider fan base. While most RPG geeks play video games, the reverse is not necessarily true. For instance, Mr T actually does play WoW (had a friend get whacked by him once), I seriously doubt he plays D&D, PF or any other TTRPG.

When you look outside of genre at sales numbers you get a sharp blow of reality - niche markets are just that - niche. The only way D&D is going to "make it big" is if they partner with Hasbro's board game division and try to make the game more family friendly to get it in big box stores. Barring that, be ready to pay and play for 3 core rule books, just like normal. DDI is probably not going to go away anytime soon, so expect it to morph upon re-launch. The real trick here is getting solid programs to have solid programs when the edition launches versus the WotC history of trying to slap something together after the fact.

The RPG industry is pretty tiny, yes. Say 'RPG' to 90% of people these days - even nerds - and they think CRPG. It makes communication difficult. I was talking about me and my fellow 'D&D nerds' to some nice but vaguely sinister Military Intelligence type people I met over in the USA last time, and they had a lot of trouble grasping that I wasn't talking about computer gamers.
You were talking to the wrong MI guys, we used to have weekend long gaming session when I was stationed in Germany. :D As a matter of fact there was an Air Force Major stationed at the National Security Agency that had several published adventures in Dungeon magazine during the late 90's early 00's.

But, I take your meaning none the less. :)

And what do you mean... sinister.... ;)

Well they were a nice, slim, attractive young military or quasi-military couple, albeit with a "We can't tell you exactly what we do" thing*; enthusiastic computer gamers, and I would say good potential RPGer material, but with zero awareness of the tabletop hobby.

*I remember here in London, for about 5 years 2003-2007 it seemed that every time we met new people at a social occasion they would be 'Private Military Contractors' (usually back office types). They always hated me calling them 'mercs'. :p

Okay, so not sinister, smart - (I've been out for 20 years and I still can't talk about exactly what I did). And there were of course those of use that were completely oblivious to the RPG thing (or even looked upon us as super-nerds /trying to build their own self-esteem/), so yeah I can see it - but trust me, they are out there. :)

I look forward, eventually, to your modern-genre adventures. ;) :)
Wouldn't do a whole lot of good if I were permanently stationed at Ft. Leavenworth. (That's the military prison for those that don't know).

No, I would love to do some maps, (even gave some advice somewhere on here about realistic point defense of a strategic target to include a verbal layout, but I don't talk about what I did, it's just safer that way. :)

:D You certainly wouldn't be allowed to profit from them. ;) :D

I'd love to have a link to that if you think you can dig it up.

I can't find it (I don't have the search feature and it was so long ago that it has fallen off of my posts page). If you would really like a copy I can always
type it up and send it to via e-mail. (Just make sure you include me as a technical writer/editor in the credits of what you put it in. :) )
