Pop Quiz - Dungeon Exploration

Cedric

First Post
I know all of you guys have some great ideas as to what to carry into the Dungeon, if your character mostly does Dungeon Exploration...

I have a Dwarven Fighter/Thief...and here is my gear:

Backpack
Belt Pouch
Flint and Steel
Tinder
30 ft. of twine
3 fish hooks
50 ft. of silk rope
6 iron pitons
small hammer
Thieve's Tools
3 Water Flasks
Two weeks Iron Rations
Small Metal Mirror
10 ft. of wire
2 pieces of chalk
2 torches
Bullseye Lantern
2 Flasks of Oil
5 bandages
10 sq. ft. of canvas

Any other thoughts? Idea's I've missed out on?

Help me create the ultimate explorer's pack,

Cedric

Well

I tend to include

Journal (for notes, mapping etc)
Quill
Ink vial

Grapple on the rope (useful for catching ridges, or for swinging forward as you move down a corridor, the weight usually triggering pit traps etc..before you get to them).

Change of clothes (never know when you might get wet, gooped etc...)

Water"skin" full of dust (holding it under arm and pressing down expels the duct out in a cloud, great for finding invisible creatures).

Collapsible pole (your stereo typical 10' pole, but it made of four pieces that slot into one another, makes it far more carriable)

Small iron cookpot (you never know when you might need a warm meal..sometimes cold rations just aren't enough, plus can be used for other things, boiling down herbs, and fats etc...)

Dagger (1001+ uses, if a silver dagger then it covers that need too ,g>)

Nails (more useful than people think, use the ruined bed to nail the door shut, or build a makeshift ladder etc...)

2 Small Bells (hang them on the twine, and you have a makeshift alarm and early warning system).

Bedroll & Blanket. (again you don't know how cold or wet the place you may sleep in a dungeon may be, plus blankets can be torn down into makeshift bandages, or stretchers)

Bag of Stones (useful for testing for illusions, and also for marking trap locations, routes taken etc... a backup for chalk really)

You need a knife to cut the rope if needed.

Also a weapon you are comfortable with (although hammer and knife are ok choices) to fight beasties, I hear they are occasionaly found in dungeons :)

The canvas is for a tent? Is the wire for setting traps?

Some random ideas:

Wasps nest in a sack (used for driving enemies out of rooms etc.)
Pig on a leash (trained to lead 10 feet ahead of party to set off traps).
Breathing straw (could even be telescoping).
Raw meat (used for dropping behind fleeing party when chased by hungry monster).
Axe (for use on wooden doors in particular).
Bag of greased marbles (safer alternative to caltrops).
Grappling hook harpoon crossbow (if allowed, might even be used to halt falling).
Footpads (for when you know you need to do some creeping).
Sack of flour (to be thrown on invisible creatures).
Crowbar (good on chests and doors).
Messenger pigeon in a cage (trained to return home upon release).
