Possible Firefly RPG

I can't understand making a Firefly RPG. Why not just create a setting book for Traveller T20. Restrict races to Human and fine tune the psionics rules for the setting (to reflect River and possible other human experiments at Blue Sun) and you are set. The rest is really just fluff that can be gotten off of watching the DVD set and making a few notes. T20 does have a setting but it also states that it is a rule set for any space rpg (kind of like how Greyhawk is the default setting for D&D). It even has rules for creating systems and speculative trade (very important for a Firefly game). Even so, if they DO come out with a setting book I'll be first in line to buy it. :)

Because the system of T20 might not convey the firefly feeling? Plus, most of the classes and tech would feel out of place. I'm not sure that speculative trade would be that important to a Firefly RPG anyway; most of their jobs involve being sent somewhere to do something by some other guy, not much freelance trading. And Firefly revolves around the action of the show, not discussing corn options.

All true CJ. I loved Firefly, but as I watched each episode I was like "Wow! This is exactly like Traveller!

I loved Firefly, but an RPG, or even a setting book for another game, isn't all that reasonable.

Why? Because there were only 13 episodes! And most of that time was (quite reasonably) spent on character development, rather than world development. Which means that most of the detailed information on the universe would have to be new. And if it wasn't presented in the context of the series, I don't expect that it woudl feel right to players. End result would be a game that wouldn't feel like the show, and what then would be the point?

Could be that Joss Whedon has all this information already detailed (or at least sketched out), so it might be ok.

I'd be psyched if this actually comes out...great show!

That is possible. However, I severely doubt that any project currently in the works would have that information. Joss wouldn't release it until he knew how Serenity did, and wheether he'd be using it for future series or movie work.

Except its not Firefly, only Firefly like. So, all the little cool things that made Firefly won't be in this. They will probably keep the general western space gritty type thing and through in corporations and psionics, but its not going to be Firefly.

I distinctly remember at the end of Shindig the crew picking up a load of cattle. Yes, speculative trade usually involves the captain's money but you could use the system to determine what jobs are available and working out a deal with the owner of the merchandise to transport the goods. I really can't think of too many of the T20 Classes that wouldn't fit somewhere. They may not have been represented in the series but that doesn't mean they couldn't exist somewhere. Most importantly, if you don't like a class, don't allow it.

Have you even looked at the T20 trade system? It is a nice a quick system that lets you find out what is available with just a few dice rolls. You could role play out the haggling. Me, as the GM I'd use the system to figure out how much the crew could make on the job and then move on to whatever happens in the course of transporting the goods.
