Post 30th level - If/When Wizards reaches 'beyond epic', what will happen?

What do people think, for those who want levels beyond, will be done? Just continue epic tier? or make a special type of epic tier for ultra planar type adventurers/servants of gods/angels/demons/devils? or something totally unique?

Epic Destinies does sound kinda cool. What could they do at level 31 or 41?

Divine Rights?
Divine Decadence?

Well, the description of Epic Destinies from Races and Classes say that they determine how your character leaves the campaign at level 31 (either becoming a god, a servant of a god, one with the earth or other such thing).

It implies that there can never be anything above 30 since at that level you are removed from the campaign. Which would fit into the design philosophy of putting levels 21-30 into the PHB in the first place.

The designers said they didn't want to have a separate set of rules for "epic play" like were created by the Epic Level Handbook in 3e. They wanted all the levels to be planned from the start and to use the same rules.

If they want that, then it only makes sense for them to put some hard rule why no one can ever get above 30.

Heh... I wouldn't say that. This "epic destiny" thing seems one heck of a lot like the old "paths to immortality" from Classic D&D (the red box/blue box/cyan box/black box game). Indeed, I'd be willing to wager a small sum of money that Classic D&D did a lot to inspire the whole tier system.

The "paths to immortality" were supposed to be the end of your character's gaming career, too. But of course everybody who'd gone through all the trouble of becoming a god wanted the fun of actually playing one, so TSR released the gold-boxed Immortals set. No matter what WotC says now, I'm pretty sure they'll eventually cave to fan pressure and release a new set of rules for characters who have achieved their epic destinies.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they were secretly planning that right now. If I were in their place, I sure would be.

Yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised if WotC came out with an Immortal's Handbook (PCs going from Demigods to Greater Gods) and Immortal Adventures somewhere down the line. That is, if the Epic Levels in 4e become as player/DM friendly as they're suggesting. I sure they'll wait though and see if the demand is there first.

They'll do it. There will be demand, and they'll have the perfect opportunity to make up for that abysmal 3.0 ELH. Yech.

I'd say, "Game over, man! Game over!"
