Just occured to me that one end-of-the-world disaster hasn't been already mentioned: the world falls apart because everybody is too busy gaming!

There was definitely a Sliders episode that had a plot like that. I would belieive it

That reminds me of the most unpleasant PA senario I have ever read- The Screwfly Solution by James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon). Boiled down:
