Singularity Sky by Stross (inventor of the Githyanki!) is basically a story about what happens when scarcity is suddenly removed from a backwards culture. The group that arrives on the planet will give you anything you want in exchange for a story - they'll even give you the ability to make anything ELSE you want.
To Sarah's point (welcome to ENWorld [MENTION=6698653]SarahNewton[/MENTION]), the people quickly run out of stories.
There will always be scarcity, it will just be scarcity of different things. Like stories and songs and templates for the replicators. Most of the first world more or less lives in a world where food is no longer scarce. If you told medieval villagers that could happen they might predict there would never be wars again . . .
