Potion of Animal Friendship: Everyone's a druid now?

Legend
As far as I can tell, anyone who drinks a potion of animal friendship instantly gets an animal companion (if they want to be the animal's friend of course). Anyone else see a flaw in this logic?

Check

When the character creates a potion, the character makes any choices that the character would normally make when casting the spell. Whoever drinks the potion is the target of the spell.

oopsie

edit- I guess if you can get the animal to ingest the potion, you're set. Hit dice will be relevant based on the caster level, so to get a good animal you'll need a high level caster which will boost the item cost.

Seems reasonable to me. Only Druids, Rangers, Shukenja, and Clerics with the Animal Domain will be making these potions regularly and I can't see them wanting such an abusive potion laying about. (A Sorcerer/Wizard can do it via Limited Wish, but that's outside the level limit for potions.)

A Ring of Animal Friendship does the same thing, but it caps out the limit of HD of animals at 12, I believe.

The interesting thing with the Ring though, is that because the friendship is not magical, once you have your animal companion using the ring, I see no reason why you have to keep on wearing it.

Hmmm......animal friendship causes the target to befriend the person who activates the spell. So if an animal drank the potion, wouldn't he become his own friend?

That would only work if he was a Maog, a half-man, half-dog creature.

Only that anyone with any Animal Handling skill at all can get bigger and better friends more easily. Why bother with a potion?

Well it's not that easy to get pets with animal handling, unless you have months to spend raising and training it. But since the potion idea doesn't work either, I guess it's the only option for non ranger/druids.
