Power Word Pain

So you need to activate a higher lvl spell to use "power pain"... wow.. that really proved something... makes it more useless.. etc.
What, did Expeditious Retreat suddenly stop being a 1st-level spell?

Anyway, it looks great in any battle against large numbers of opponents. If there are more enemies than you can attack at once anyway, just don't attack the one you cast Power Word Pain on. No wasted resources.

Also, this looks like one of those arguments founded on mismatched expectations. In the 5-year game I played in until it ended earlier this year, the average combat lasted for 11 rounds, and 20+ round combats were not uncommon. Power Word Pain would have been amazingly useful in these long running battles. If your group's combats last an average of 2 rounds, well, then it will clearly be less useful for you.

Races of Dragon has been out for a while now. Has this issue been addressed officially? If the levels for PW:Distract and PW:Pain were mixed up, you'd think someone would have announced it by now.

You take damage according to your hit point total at the time the spell was cast. What's afterwards doesn't matter.

Or do you think the spell duration grows longer while your hit points drop down. Now that would be mean.
