[PR] Exciting New Accessories from Paradigm

25 bucks a set for four sets however is rediculous! TSR had 2 sets at $20 to get a complete set it cost $40 Your set for the same spells would cost $75! how is that a freeze? that seems like a 100 percent hike to me...

TSR published some of these about 10 years ago, and I believe the price then was about $20 each for Magic-User and for Cleric sets. These new prices seem to be in line.

Any idea how successful those where? I bought them myself back then as they seemed like a great idea, but in practice I never really used them...

Past use

In an old high level campaign I used to play in, one of the other mages in the party had a set of the 2nd edition wizard ones and he found them very helpful. He had a ton of spells and so he had a box with all the ones he knew separated by level, then he would have the ones he memorized pulled out in a pile for use. It made looking up the effect of the spells he knew and had memorized fairly easy. Also customizing it for changes in memorized spells was easy. He also made custom ones to add spells from other sources and the standard size of the cards made this feasible with note cards and tiny point size print outs. Doing it for so many core spells would have taken way too long however.

There were actually three sets in 2nd edition, there were the wizard and priest ones which covered PH and Tome of Magic (I think) and then there was a psionic set which had all of the powers from the Complete Psionic Handbook, The Will and the Way, and Dragon Kings. I got the last one and thought it was great, particularly because I didn't have the Dark sun books. (the psionicist in our party also had this set and used them all the time).

Depending upon the visual appeal of these things and the number of cards in each set, I don't see the problem with the price. This is a product for players, not for DMs. If you play a psionicist, you only need one of these sets. Unless you regularly play a ton of character from a bunch of different spellcasting classes, you only need to buy one of these.

Not to foreshadow or harp on this, but do you realize that allot of people are turning to technology to help with their gaming? Allot of people are using: palm pilots, Windows CE devices, laptops, etc. at the gaming table. Now if you had come out and said "Hey we got this piece of software, it will fit on your palm or ipaq or laptop and allow you to flip and search through spells with ease and tell you the stats and so forth on them." I would be interested.

Carting around 1lb more of stuff in my already cramped bag is not an option, I have managed to condense all my gaming needs to one device, my IPAQ and it holds everything I need. Seeing this as a solution, why not go that route instead of printing material. In this regard you could get more money for the product, less overhead, and be able to sell it online for allot less. And I think people would buy it.

Printed material is useful for only so much. If you are a DM and you have a cleric and a mage to role play it would be a nightmare to try and sort through what spells get what. Right now I just have the spells listed for each major NPC on my IPAQ in .html format exported from PCGen and I can flip through the books that are needed for now. Would I love to have the OGC of other publishers on it? Sure, it would nice to have Relics and rituals spells listed on my IPAQ tell me what each one did so i don't have to flip thorugh things.

Electronic medium is the way of the future IMHO, print is alive but I hope will not be the ONLY way people get out products much like monte cooks releases on .pdfs.

I would love to have a comprehensive software database of all things Paradigm that could be placed on handheld devices. The costs involved at this time leave no profit potential in my judgement. Gamers are a small market and few gamers have Palm Pilots or iPaq handhelds, making that software market basically microscopic at this time.

BTW, these cards will fit into photo album sheets for binders, so they are every bit as easy to carry around as CCG cards.

Have Fun!
