[PR] S.T. Cooley Publishing releases "Buy the Numbers"

Mr. 3000 (Words per post)
S.T. Cooley Publishing is proud to present our latest release, "Buy the Numbers!" What is it? It's an alternative character generation/advancement system that replaces the concept of "class & level" with a simple, "spend XP, increase your abilities" system - and it's fine-tuned enough to allow the purchase of a single point of Base Attack Bonus or a single daily spell slot! 58 pages that re-arrange the rules you're used to! It can be purchased from our exclusive vendor, RPGNow.com, By clicking this link! The product description follows.

Tired of multi-classing, just to get one ability from a certain class? Perhaps you wanted to be a Rogue with a few spells, but the ‘singing’ Bard was not appealing. Maybe you wanted to be a nature warrior, but did not desire all the spells from the Ranger class? Have you ever wanted a mage who could rage?

Have you ever thought it was silly to adventure for weeks and weeks without ever showing improvement, but then you hit a ‘magic’ number of xp and ‘BAM’: all of your abilities increase? Has your character ever traveled into a new land and you asked the GM if you could try and learn the local language? But the GM had to respond “sorry, you can’t learn anything new until you get 4,500 more experience points”.

Now, you no longer have to purchase libraries full of supplements, just to find a pseudo-class that suits your needs. Now you can gain skills, abilities, spells, as you go!

Get ready to change the way you think of character advancement. Get ready to have unprecedented freedom of choice! Get ready for: “Buy the Numbers!”

Damn!
Now I need to get some cash together in the paypal account so that I can buy this sucker.

Will be interesting to see how you have put it together Spence and if it is something my group is looking for.

But it will have to wait til after the holiday as that is where all the cash has gone for the moment.

I've been eagerly awaiting this since I heard you mention it in another thread. I'm about to go and purchase it now :)

It's a pretty moot point since I'm going to have this thing downloaded before you'll have answered, but how well does this system support non-standard abilities such as ones I might create myself or take from the abilities of various 3rd party classes & prestige classes?

The guidelines are actually pretty simple, with examples provided in the text of conversions from SRD-based prestige classes. At its core, the system could be summed up with a half-page of relatively simple mathematical equations (mostly algebraic types with several sum functions).

Will there be a printed version?
I am working on getting a POD version done at RPGMall.com - it may take a couple of weeks to get it all ready, but... the answer is: yes, shortly. A quick glance at the POD worksheet provided tells me that you're likely looking at a cost in the neighborhood of $12.50 or so for a printed version (which recoups the cost of printing and still lets me "take home" about the same amount of profit I make on a PDF sale).

Very nice.
I will have to take a look.

I'd been scratching my head over the possibility of trying something like this myself but was a bit wary of actually making the attempt. So, to reveal the depths of my greed (and my desire to not re-invent the wheel to do a very similar thing for a project of my own)... is this system offered as open content?

Yes. As with all of my PDFs, the only thing that isn't open is (some of) the artwork, with the product name, my name, company name & website, and e-mail address being reserved as PI (so I can control who uses my name of course). The rules themselves, as well as the explanatory text, et al, is all 100% OGC. :)

There is also a provision made for referencing the product by name ("Buy the Numbers") in other works, pursuant to the conditions of the Open Game License regarding Product Identity - you don't even have to ask me to be able to reference the product by name, provided your work uses or adapts the rules found in my work.

Basically, I PI my company name and email address for (obvious) control reasons (I don't want just anyone slapping my name on their stuff), I don't include the art as OGC because I don't own the copyright on it, then I OGC everything else. :)

But then, I'm funny in that I *want* other people to use my stuff. :)

Excellent.
Ring up a sale.
:)

Thanks!

How 'bout d20 Modern

Can the product be used just as well for d20 Modern (and presumably d20 Future)? I'm a bit worried about class defense bonuses and other small differences that might not be adressed in Buy the Numbers.

If the answer is yes, you're looking at a 100% sure to buy guy.
