As a player: Always first person.

Edit: Well, when actually playing. I have to admit it wigs me out when people refer to their character in the first person when talking about him/her out of the game.

I use both, depending on how much attention I want to give to something, or to stress importance. And I'll usually mix them, at times going all out immersive with an NPC as I talk to the players, and other times stepping back and describing things in a bit more of a 3rd person perspective with 'so and so does this, and so and so walks up to you and says, etc).

Depends on the tone and atmosphere I want to project really.

Same here (on both counts).

As DM, I always refer to the character, never the person - although sometimes I have to say the person's name to get their attention.

1st Person Ambience

Agreed, although I try to use 1st person as much as possible ... especially in our current campaign (it keeps up the mystery and suspense).

Unless we're specifically talking out of character, first person while playing. So, actions, mannarisms, and speech is always first person, but if someone asks what color my character's eyes are, I'll probably respond in the third person instead of the third.

When DMing I never use first person, always third person. "He does this," and "She does that," instead of "I do this." I can't imagine that first person would be effective while DMing. I consider less myself taking a role when DMing and more facilitating my players' taking of roles. Also it would get confusing if multiple NPCs were involved or when we switched which NPC I was playing.
