Pramas on the OGL

has anyone considered the possibility that the GSL is finished and has finally been offered/shown to those interested? Remember, they have to sign an NDA and can't even say they've seen it!

Except that the previous offer was open to anyone with 5k. The existence of the license itself is not covered by NDA or no-one would be able to pay up and know to sign the NDA. The NDA covers the terms of the GSL not its existence.

I'm afraid that you're mistaken.

The NDA covers all communications between the signee and WOTC. Hypothetically, if we received the GSL, or any communication regarding it, we would be unable to say so.

Because they were losers. I'm not going to fault the OGL for causing people to make trash-quality d20 books even though it wouldn't have been possible without it - it was Mark MacKinnon's choice to print a crappy half-conversion of his system to d20, and Chaosium's choice to print a crappy half-conversion of their Elric RPG to d20.

And count me in for welcoming more OGL games. Mongoose's version of RuneQuest is printed under the OGL, and from what I understand, Mongoose's version of Traveller will be as well. It'd totally be awesome if Rolemaster went OGL, as yet another game that's not overly tied to a proprietary world and that would benefit from expansion.

If many presently successful commercial lines go OGL then I am pro OGL too. Very pro that is. But I think this is just wishful thinking.

BESM d20 wasn't that bad of a system. It needed some more work done, I think, but it was intricate and very interesting.

Gareth makes a good point in support of this, but there's absolutely no reason for WotC to keep it a secret if the GSL is finished. There'd be no real downside to them just announcing that the license was done, and that anyone who wanted to sign up for the exclusivity period should give them a call. I think that if the GSL were finished, they'd say so.

I never, ever, would have looked at Runequest if it wasn't OGL. As it is, I downloaded the pdf (hey, Mongoose was giving it away for free!) and printed it, and I haul it out when I'm getting tired or frustrated with D&D or True20. Just the thought that I can modify it and screw around with it makes it more attractive.

However, if you haven't received the GSL, then you're free to say so -- thus, whenever all the people who are going to get a look at the GSL stop saying that they haven't yet received it, we'll know!

:D

8. Does the NDA prevent publishers from announcing that they are participating in Phase One?
Absolutely not. They’re free to promote their involvement.
Huh. If you announce you are participating in Phase One, looks like you are revealing that you received the GSL. Do you think this statement from back in January is now incorrect?

We've already seen a publisher announce they were Phase One, back in January (Necromancer). Announcing Phase One status, and saying "We have been given the GSL" are two very different things.
