I did not like Monstrous Regiment but perhaps it's worth a reread. My actual at-home Discworld collection is woefully small. I think I must have borrowed most of them from the public library over the years. Popped into a used bookstore the other day, but they only had copies of books I already owned.

For Monstrous Regiment, it helps if you know what the title is a reference to.
The first thing the name invoked in my mind was DCs Creature Commandos and only later connected the Monstrous Regiment of Women (which I was only vaguely aware of). The trope is well established regardless (I think I may have watched the BBC production of Tipping the Velvet just prior to reading Monstrous Regiment so that may have been an influence too)

Anyway its certainly an unexpected diversion from core of the Discworld series and is a bleaker tale with less obvious humour and wittiness than Pratchetts usual style. I did enjoy the story and exploration of themes but I do not think I would return to it for a repeat read when there is so much other material to explore.

Perhaps the follow-up poll should be, excluding Vimes*, who is your favourite Discworld character?

* because otherwise he’d clearly win all the votes
I had considered doing that first - Best Characte Poll and then a vote on books featuring that character
but as the Poll allowed all 41 entries I decided to list them all instead.

As it is my favourite characters in order are Susan Sto Helit, Rob Anybody, DEATH, Igor, Granny Weatherwax, Sam Vimes and The Patrician

and for the record I voted Hogfather for its rereadability, mix of folklore, philosophy, pop culture and charm and its ranges of themes and characters - Susan, Death, The first Bogeyman ...

and while I do like the story I'm actually suprised that Small gods is doing so well

Small Gods was my first Discworld novel, but I can’t call it my favorite.

Because, even though I have enjoyed some more than others, I can’t call ANY my favorite.
