PrCs with caster level requirements

Complete Arcane sets an interesting new precedent in saying that a warlock can't qualify for spellcasting PrCs because it doesn't cast spells... but it CAN qualify for PrCs with just a 'caster level x' requirement as the caster level on their spell-like invocations satisfies this requirement. It states this in general terms and does not say 'only a warlocks spell like abilities can qualify you in this way' or anything similair sooo..

Take a PrC like Acolyte of the Skin for example. Requirements includes "Spells or Spell-like abilities: Caster level 5th". Now take a Tiefling fighter 5.

Darkness (Sp): A tiefling can use darkness once per day (caster level equal to class levels).

So does he qualify ? His spell-like abilities have a caster level of 5th, just like a warlock... I'm pretty sure this was unintended.

Similar to the Mystra clerics qualifying for arcane PrC via Anyspell.

They said, AFAIK, that they cannot do that.

If it's unintended, it's kind of lame... hard to think they didn't recall how many monsters and races have spell-like abilities :\ However if the PrCl grants spellcasting levels, I don't know if they also apply to spell-like abilities (is it said the Warlock gets the new ones?). In any case, the racial SLAs are increased by the overall character level but they won't otherwise benefit from spellcasting levels which are the most valuable feature of those PrCls typically.

Yup, like Li Shenron said, they qualify, but so what? Unless they have a level in a spellcasting class, they won't get much benefit from +1 caster level, anyway.

You could make a funky tiefling rogue 4/wizard 1/acolyte of the skin x... dex/con increases, poison, caster level increases for your sorceror levels... could actually be a fun (albeit funky) build ! I'm sure there's other possibilities ;)

Heck, acolyte of the skin is frontloaded enough to make taking just 1 level worthwhile, for many different classes.

I would say no. They have a spell-like ability and for that ability they have a caster level. Other than that they do not have a caster level. If a tiefling picked up a staff, would you let them use their HD as the caster level to activate it? The new caster level prestige classes also opens the door for the artificer from Eberron to qualify for some new things.
